meter, it was a valid name drop to make a point about the school and it's graduates. lets try this again with you shutting up.
you scowered NT for hours im sure just so you could get that witty comment in. you get -1 for lack of creativity.

calarts is a great school, especially for the grad program, or so i hear. visit first, its kinda out in nowhere, so you have to drive. I'm about to finish art school in a semester and my experience has been great. it taught me how to think and that's something that i wouldn't have picked up by myself.
be cool, go to school!

just gotta say this....
Fuck Art Center
- superbaka0
why?
- fresnobob0
Because eceryone thinks its te greatest school and the work sucks
- superbaka0
the people saying it kicks ass were from the older days when it did kick ass. (90s). the work has gone downhill since. so yes, currently their output sucks. blame the new president richard koshalek, who was never even a designer.
still, calarts its a fine art school, not a design school. their cirriculum/faculty is highly lacking. design is not art.
- fresnobob0
All of the design faculty, save one, are pretty amazing designers... Ed Fella pretty much started postmodernism for god's sake...
- superbaka0
i feel like one school emphasizes the artist end of things, the other is more commercial. imagine giving a sponser presentation to the ceo of ford at school in a suit and tie standing in front of a wall of grafitti or some pompus-ass fine art sculpture. like i said, design is not art. being a famous designer to me means making large strides in the business world as well, not just working on style and form from a secluded studio, or working in theory like cranbrook.
speaking of which, does calarts have sponsered projects? just curious..
- fresnobob0
But graphic design is not just about commerciaism. Graphic design is like a visual language for communication. Limiting design to just the commercial world is a bad thing. that is the problem. most institutions and persons don't see beyonf this shallow realm. graphic design is about communicating ones ideas, yes it could be commercial, but iit is definatley not limited to that. As far as design not being art, i will agree, but it is a very fine line, and a line which can be crossed (for example, Constructivism). And Calarts is also far from just exercises in form and style. Form and style are only a small portion of what needs go into a piece of design. That is one of the problems with graphic design today. it has no substanance and no direction.
- superbaka0
first, my experience was in the industrial design program, where real issues are solved beyond aesthetics (but not lately). i agree that style w/o substance is stupid. but its precisely the attachment to the commercial world that makes it design. (note: im speaking again from the ID pov. in ID, the real world forces you to design a car that fits real people and markets, whereas other schools just make flashy models of toys. now, graphics in general suffers here because its almost always a form of advertising, unlike products and vehicles).
in the old accd days, you HAD to wear a suit and tie to class - drawing, lettering, etc. its just that kind of place, like the military. its roots are in taking artists and finding them a craft they can survive off of. my teachers designed every significant car, toys, and products i grew up with. i know many starving calarts grads that have just as big of chip on their shoulder because they are great artists but bitch about the man (read: capitalism) holding them down.
- fresnobob0
Thats cause capitalism does that sort of shit to you. haha, anyways, its been a nice discussion.
- superbaka0
but there is no doubt accd's work as of late blows. in the 90s, that place was rock solid. amazing designs, craftmanship, professionalism. largely because it was under the japanese influence. it recently shifted to a majority korean student body, raised tuition to pay for a shitty frank ghery building, and as a result only rich kids get in and do shallow designs. the alumni are pissed.

"Thats cause capitalism does that sort of shit to you."
spoken like a true fine-artist. :)
