IPOD:
For: can stand a lot of falling, hitting. My friends ipod fell from 2.5m right on the ground. It hurt everyone watching it... and nothing. It still works perfectly.
That's the only + I can give it.Lacks: Default phones need to have VOLUME control in order not to have to stick your hand into the pocket all the time. I don't think it costs to manufacture so much...
Then, Apple should try, at least once to make something functional. Ipod has only one port (that's, that "minimal" design), the same you use for charging and for connecting it to your computer. This means you cannot (by default) have it charging and transfering files; which means if you plan to transfer a lot of music need to have the battery full otherwise power will simply run out really soon.
Then there's another stupid thing. A month ago I transfered all of my MP3's to ipod. After a week my HD crashed and I lost all the music. So I tried to transfer back files from ipod... gues what? shit.... that's it... it cannot be done.
That made me very pissed off. So you know what?I sold the shit and right now I'm just hoping that SONY will decide to make an MP3 player, which will be something nice, aesthetic, high quality and FUNCTIONAL (mr. Jobs, look for this word in a dictionary).
PERIOD.

I know it looks ugly, and it might not have all the "cool" accessories the ipod has, but I've had my i-river for a little over 6 months now and I am happy with it.
I agree it's not the prettiest girl at the party, but i always hide it and use the cool little control that comes with it.
Not saying you should get it, but you should seriously consider it.

the two reasons I've held off on buying an iPod are iTunes and gb capacity... 40gb is still 'not enough', strangely.
iTunes is evil though - I've watched two of my friends rape the ordering of their mp3 collections with it, and as far as I'm concerned, there's simply not justification in creating a full album-file path for single songs. That's just silly.
Anyway, fool-me, I'm still labouring with a crappy 256mb usb-player - but I do like being able to just drag'n'drop albums on't.

I think the i-River is quite attractive looking

VSLX - there's only one port cos there's only one cable, which handles both charging and transferring at the same time
and there's plenty of shareware available to transfer mp3s from the iPod to the HD.
have you actually used an iPod?

ants,
what about when music is playing but I'm scrolling through songs, or in another menu?
The volume goes up and it's not easy to quickly change the volume.

Just everyone wait until next year. They'll cost half what they do now and they'll be better.

I am going to assume that most people here that consider the ipod not "user friendly" are PC people.
Why I assume that is because your not use to flawless communication between software and hardware.
ipod and itunes solution is the best solution out there.
volume on ear phones, keeping wild folder names, buttons all over the player, these are sloppy unfriendly eyes good for geeks only.
it's simple- on purpose- and that is the point.

you guys are all snobs, buy what you like. I loaded up an ipod mini for a friend the other day. My first experience with the ipod and I thought it was great. Although I am quite sure that the creative and the iriver would give you the same pleasure. its just a fucking mp3 player. Who cares what it looks like? I realize you are all designers but quit acting like bitches.

someone on nt should make ipod cases out of kevlar or tennis ball/basketball material.

i'll back up that i-tunes sucks. when i installed it, it took my whole music folder (around 50 gigs) and restored it all into an illogical mess of folders, separating out albums into 15 different folders, etc. by the ID3 tags that aren't always on point. now i have to either sit for 3 months to reorganize it or just start over.
so yeah, fuck i-tunes for that one.
