the level of usage of meta tags depends on the search engine technology. outdated ones really work with meta tags only (which is not wise since for instance porn sites slam a lot of irrelavant crap in their meta tags making it appear high in the lists). newer ones work with relevance and meta tags. relevance as in do other related sites link to this site as well. either way it's still smart to use meta tags. this ofcourse is explained quite simple.
