rate per project yeah but always tallt up your hours and if it goes over the quoted amount then their end price is on the meter.

Hey engage,
I wish I could charge project rates for what I do...but the projects are always so scattered and unorganizzed...and considering the time frames I have for things...figuring out project rates would take too much time for my clients........

Ive never heard of designers doing day rates, only like photographers.

a daily rate is how much you charge for a days work.
6 hours or so.
depends what youre used to.example: if you charge £120 a day and you do 2 and a half days work you charge £300

This would be for the advertising business....not website design......so its always a rush to do things.....

if it take a day to dig a hole, how long does it take to dig a quarter of a hole?
- JazX0
as a freelance day rate I asked for 25/hr
- JamesEngage0
you'll give web design a bad name... Why is it always a rush to do things?
Is it coz you charge out at a quarter of a day?
- JamesEngage0
..and who said 6 hours days!
- right... he's A Brit. Maybe they don't work so hard :DThe_CCG

Hi rasp,
thats the problem I am running into......what if they want to start work at an irregular time...lets say toward the end of your normal business hour, do you charge more for working later in the day.....
ps: sorry I don't know UK currency....

engage, interesting question, what kind of geology are we looking at here? Is there an asphalt layer or grass? Will we be needing to alert any local residents?
I can arrange a quote, we dig some amazing holes.

stop using time-based rates.
it's silly.
- JamesEngage0
you can't dig a quarter of a hole.

6hours? hehe try 18
- JamesEngage0
if you start late in the day... you work out how many hours you have done, and then think of the number of hours a full day is...
But... better still just charge what you think the job should cost... you can't make them pay more just coz you're slow etc.

The question really is then....when to charge a day rate? My day rate is a lot less than what my hourly rate works out to? I'm not talking measly $25 an hour either.....there's a big difference when you charge what I'm charging.......
Hi 4cy,
How do you charge for project rates, when you don't know the entire project and won't know? I'm pretty much given work to do and have a short period of time to do them. There really small projects but a shitload of them, some harder than others....the ad business....thanks NT for sucha quick response...
- rasko40
well really your talking as if your running a project there engage, if he's been called to help out at a studio and they have asked for his 'day rate' then he should be tallying up hours and decide for himself if he wants to charge an additional rate after a certain (a) time of evening or (b)certain number of hours worked ie; 8hrs
- JamesEngage0
ridiculous
- JamesEngage0
who charges more for working later in the day?
- If someone says "Hey I need this in the morning" and it's 4 pm... you're not going to think "Rush Charge"?The_CCG

your question was:
how a day rate works.my answer is:
what ever you charge for a days work.a days work is a days work, no matter what time you start, what currency your in or how many hours you class as a days work.
is this so confusing?
and yes, some clients ask for a days rate. especially if your going into their studios, using their equipment and working on thier jobs.
excuse my shite typing
