jh,
that helps a lot...I've been freelancing for about a year and a half now and have to figure out all this stuff alone....hourly always works best but a couple of clients only do day rates...Does anyone know a place where I can get freelance pricing guide....eg. day rate, hourly rate, overtime rate...or other ways of charging......?

tell the agency to save the day rate for screwing over photographers.

There is a piece missing here:
You HAVE to work out a day rate based on what you need to run your business (service). You need to divide the days you think you might work by the amount you need to operate. That becomes a guide to your day rate. You need this regardless of whether you charge by a project basis since you can't calculate the true cost of a project unless you can estimate the time value.
Charging by the hour can actually be quite profitable - but it does depend on the client. Charging by the project often means working more for less money since clients always push if they know you can't budge on the cost.
If you work more than 8 hours per day you could count that as overtime (an agency cetainly might) but only if the deadline requires it, not if you're trying to give yourself a free day the day after. I would stick with a fixed hourly costing, based on a day rate calculated as above - if you can.
Costing out jobs takes forever and often eats into the amount of time you can do "invoicable" work. But again it's an overhead you need to allow for.
Much of this is just business not specific to design, but any type of service.

Derek,
First off...went to your site..your shit rox...See ur out in NYC...me in Philly but all clients are in brooklyn and manhattan...are you a freelancer? Where do you work?
- fyoucher10
4cy,
funny....lol...me hate that too...but I don't make websites...just flash advertisements..."do want to do whatever I can to help them out.."...meaning that I would work overnight if needed...not charge less...funny..stop our devaluation!!! Nice....

per project can lead to disaster, and sometimes good things.
a project might be done in a day, and you make 2 grand.
or.. a project can drag on and on and client goes nuts, and you end up making 10 an hour for that one...
but the project before you made 100 an hour..
i charge based on the project, then REVISIONS are per hour.ill do revisions, but ill do it for pay thank you....
;)

"I don't want to sound like slaveboy to my clients, but I do want to do whatever I can to help them out..."
that DOES sound like slavery and much worse: ruining the business of design.
stop our devaluation!!!
god how i hate 'companies' that DO websites for less then nothing..
- fyoucher10
I do get screwed but in the end..its always a good thing....$$$wise...the money is good but when do charge more or less?
- mrdobolina0
day rate versus hourly sounds like a way for a designer to get screwed over by an agency to me. is a day 8 hours?
- fyoucher10
Engage,
Don't I wish I could just go back to the client and tell them that I'll charge more....then I'd probably lose them....you've got some good clients on your sleeve.....would you tell them that? I don't want to sound like slaveboy to my clients, but I do want to do whatever I can to help them out.....
- fyoucher10
Rasko...is exactly right....I would be another pair of hands....
