There's a big basque community where i live. the basque memorial statue is pretty cool too. it's in a park, near a river where i sometimes go lizard hunting.

when I went to Espana in 1992 I got to love the Basque people...they warned me that when I went south not to mention how much I liked the north.
I took my wife and kids to northern Espana last year for a month...and they fell in love with it too.

Basically there is no freedom in the basque country to express your political opinion. If you decide you dont want to express your political opinion (ever) you can certainly live comfortably in the Basque country. If you go a step beyond and decide you want to support the Basque Nationalist party and vote for them or become involved you can live very well and make tons of money because in this little microwolrd of social experimentation, everything falls into place then. A couple of years ago the basque region was one of the richest regions. Now the rest of Spain is growing at a larger pace. Why? why dont people go and live in the Basque country and make tons of money? Well because they want to express their opinions maybe? Yes.
If it wasnt for the fact that the Basque Nationalist Party is supported in theories and goals by the ultra sadistic terrorist band ETA this situation would be nothing more than a bad joke. But every couple of months they kill somebody. The have killed police officers, journalists, military, young politicians and even children(unintentionally). They have killed more that 800 people. Who will be next?
Ill tell you who will be next. It will be someone who is on a "ETA list" this lists are made with the names of every single politician who is NOT a member of the Basque Nationalist Party, journalists who dont support the theories of the Basque nationalist party, plus all the members of the 4 or 5 different police forces that exist in Spain, plus the military of course. Yes thats right, every single member of the basque parliamet who is not a member of the Basque Nationalist party has to walk around with bodyguards, even the most unimportant or illiterate politician, article writers, jornalists and so on, I tell you this is fucking nuts..The basque parliament is this crazy bodyguard madness that is absolutely unheard of in any other civilized part of the world.
I live in Madrid but I have met many good friends who once lived there, in the basque region. But of course for "circumstances of life" they were forced to leave. One of my best friends here, whose dad is a cop, has nightmares for stories and im not even going to get into that now. I tell you youd go nuts.
my opinion is that it is a sick society, cruel with the victims and with a lot of fear of the terrorists. An average basque is bound to be either a cruel bastard or a fucking coward.

I have a lot of Basquish friends (met in Newcastle over many years, bizarelly) and I go to Bilbao once a year.
The Basques are fucking great people - mad bastards for sure - they tend towards the extreme...
A very proud race, with an enviable form of nationalism - a pride in their history and culture, not in some 'superiority'.
When you consider what Spain (ie Franco and the Republik) has done over the years to their entire people and culture, you can understand where the problems come from. Understand - but of course, not accept. Bad things happen everywhere, of course - the 'problems' with ETA etc are just, in this instance, a well-known face for a certain kind of person.

raoulito, I do understand your point. And I'm completely against any violence targeting innocent people, even if they represent or relate to, in the 'terrorist' views, to an occupying force of some kind.
What I would like to make clear is that I don't think that the world is make of Black&White. There's a wide range of greys, and sometimes is very difficult to draw the line where there's a genuine strugle for freedom or it's just another group with some elitist agenda...

I stayed in the Basque Country for about a month a few years ago... I found it beautiful, and for the most part, the people I met were great. They were very proud of their history and talked about it in almost a mythical way. On the other hand, I also noted a disturbing undercurrent of fascism there (no joke, mostly with the younger people i met).
With that being said, there are plenty of things that disturb me about many people I meet in the US...
I would go back... I can't make any generalizations about a group of people having had such limited experience...

I went to Bilbao and San Sebastian once. I was scared shitless that the people writing ETA graffiti on the walls would come and kidnap me or blast bombs or other crazy shit. Nevertheless I enjoyed my stay. Beautiful place, nice waves and plenty of sunshine. Don't really know whether it would really be useful for the people to separate from Spain though. Economics of Scale tend to help the big ones in EU. Anyways if I'm heading to Spain I will rather visit Catalonia and Basque country than Madrid :)

Lot's of seperatists. Hee, hee, no really I was in the North of Spain once and it was quite beautiful, yet very rugged terrain. Linguists say that the Basque language is quite unique and has extremely old roots.

First of all, "basque country" is not a country. Yes, they have an old language, so what? Galicia or Catalonia (both regions of Spain) also have their own languages.
The main problem is terrorism (E.T.A), an extremely violent organization claiming for the independency of that region of Spain - a group of crazy guys who kill inocent people (children, women, anyone who is in the wrong place at the wrong time).
THAT is the main problem, and that's the reason why the goverment of Quebec (similar situation here in Canada) dont want to know ANYthing about basque independentism. I mean, they don't want to be related to a (very) violent nationalism.

Portugal only exists because we separated from Castela (the kingdom that aggregated all the other in the Peninsula and formed Spain). We once were considered separatists and if it happened in the current time we could be considered 'terrorists'.
If one doesn't know the history and the people shouldn't make such fast judgements...
