I must say I omitted a few compact camera pro's, just because I don't see these as advantages:
- video recording capability
- LCD live preview (on a dslr you can only live preview through the optical viewfinder)
- quite usable tilt or swivel LCD for live preview on some modelsI'm not a pro, just gathering information for my own use. I once moved from a good 4MP compact to a 3MP dslr and was happy about it. Also, the latter taught me a lot more about photography. I was just going to get a 6MP one but decided I will be moving soon and can't justify fun spendings now.
Now, megapixels..
6MP is about the quality of scanned 35mm camera film. (it gets better with slide film, reportedly about 9-11MP).
Megapixels are mostly used by marketing depts to push new models to the market. 8MP is actually not much bigger than 6. Also, an 8MP compact camera does not compare with an 8MP dslr. The compact camera lenses don't offer as much optical resolution as their own 8MP sensors. Even if they're called Zeiss (sony) or L (canon), they're not even nearly pro. It's only marketing babble. The cheapest interchangeable canon L lens starts at some $700 and is optically and mechanicaly superb (sharpness, color rendition, clarity, environmental sealing, focusing speed, quietness, etc.)D70 vs. 8700 (large files)

I bet if you blow up the D70 pics to 8MP in photoshop they will still have more detail than the 8700 ones. Note that the D70 pics were shot with a standard kit lens, it could get even better with a different piece of glass on it.I hear the canon digital rebel replacement will have 8MP if you really need this much. Wait a week for the PMA and see. It should be around $800 in the US.
Have fun with your cam whichever you choose ;)
