OK, I'll try to post something on topic.
For this device's price I recommend you not buy this camera. Either get a small, portable up to $300 point&shoot or a dslr. Why a dslr over N8700?
    - image quality. dslr cameras have physically (forget MP's) bigger sensors which are way less noisy.
    - optical viewfinder. Maybe in a few years they will introduce comparable EVF's, but not yet.
    - speed. Instant on. Serial shots. no shutter lag.
    - battery life. Did I say instant on? It's always on. Standby to shooting mode in just about 0.2 sec. And with most dslrs you can shoot for a day or two on one battery set.
    - interchangeable lenses. unbeatable with add-on lenses. A great part of the fun. And of course, it's a different class of optical quality.
    - high sensitivity. As I said, dslr cams have much lower noise levels. You can shoot at ISO1600 and the picture quality will be better than N8700's ISO400. Great feature for night shots.
    - zoom and focus rings. If you must buy a compact, get one of the minoltas (A2, A200), they have manual zoom ring.
    - and last but not least, shutter sound. You can't compare the feeling you get when you hear the mirror slap with compact's artificial pre-recorded sound. I don't know about you, but I make better pictures with a camera that feels good.

My recommendations in Nikon 8700's price tag are:
    pentax *istds
    canon digital rebel
    nikon d70

I'm going to get the pentax for it's almost pocket size and backward lens compatibility untill 70's.
Best thing to do is wait a week and see what emerges during PMA 2005 http://www.dpreview.com/articles…
Rumors are, new canon and nikon models are coming out, so there will be huge discounts on the older models.
