first, my experience was in the industrial design program, where real issues are solved beyond aesthetics (but not lately). i agree that style w/o substance is stupid. but its precisely the attachment to the commercial world that makes it design. (note: im speaking again from the ID pov. in ID, the real world forces you to design a car that fits real people and markets, whereas other schools just make flashy models of toys. now, graphics in general suffers here because its almost always a form of advertising, unlike products and vehicles).
in the old accd days, you HAD to wear a suit and tie to class - drawing, lettering, etc. its just that kind of place, like the military. its roots are in taking artists and finding them a craft they can survive off of. my teachers designed every significant car, toys, and products i grew up with. i know many starving calarts grads that have just as big of chip on their shoulder because they are great artists but bitch about the man (read: capitalism) holding them down.
