simply ... as time went on and tips became customary here in the states the salary was reduced greatly. Without your tips even waiters in the nicest of restaurants make minimum wage.

I was a waiter and my gf is one now. Wait till you see what happens when you stop tipping all together...prices will go up (so that restaurants can pay to have halfway decent employees working there), less skilled people will be serving you your food (think of the people you KNOW make minimum wage and imagine them handling your food), not to mention I would imagine that the chances of a waiter getting you that extra slice of lemon that you love to be next to nil...thats if they can understand english at all.

But no, tipping will never die...and waiters in the states will continue to hate foreigners for not understanding or caring. And foreigners will continue to stiff waiters because they feel that tipping is stupid. Such is life and I'm glad I am no longer involved in food service.

Basically...tips are somewhat figured into a waiters salary, only difference between our waiters and your waiters is that you as a customer can legally withold part of our waiters salary. If I go to NZ and don't tip, your waiter still goes home with the same amount of $$.
