My case: If you want influential, in terms of inspiring other groups to their own creativity, it has to be the Stones. You cannot be influenced by the Beatles without everyone always saying "Wow, they sound like the Beatles!" (See Jellyfish, Oasis, etc. etc.) This goes as well for Bob Marley ("He's / They're The next Bob Marley!" See Eddie Grant, Ziggy, etc...)
The Rolling Stones were just inimitable enough that you couldn't really cop them exactly and you ended up with a bunch of bad gaage bands saying "Fuck, I can do that!" influenced by them that in turn became influential themselves (Stooges, Replacements, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses, etc...)
Furthermore, Marley is dead. The beatles are also either dead or up their own arse. The Rolling Stones are still a cohesive unit producing & touring. For a bonus, Keith Richards is still getting drunk falling out of coconut trees in the tropics.
- "getting drunk?" He doesn't get drunk. He is drunk all the time. There is no getting. He is.boobs
