I'm not sure if I'll watch it - I think I might be too chicken. The premise sounds pretty interesting. I also think the premise of the new Lars Von Trier film sounds interesting.
I wonder if it's possible for cinema (based on imagination rather than documentary) to overstep a boundary. I know this has been discussed to death, but as more and more shocking examples are produced I suppose the question becomes even more relevant.
I kind of think that anyone in a position of power, should be indebted to those who are subject to whatever that power might be. So in the case of a movie director, the affect the director has on an audience should really be of at least some concern.
But then I suppose film is also notable because of the generally self-serving nature of art as a medium - people generally express ideas and emotions via art; and the best examples of art are honest, so the net result isn't something which can / or should be gauged beforehand.
I guess, two opposing dynamics like this are always going to cause controversy and the subject isn't likely to be cleared up ever - so I may as well shut up now :)
I just read an interesting comment about Martyrs on IMDB - where a person reviewing the film made reference to a French guy called Bataille (http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/bata... who's interests seem to dovetail with the plot of the film. Maybe I'll read a book instead.
