@ Cosmoo:
As a Spurs fan I say this –
If, say, a Saudi billionaire came in and bought the club, we went out and bought 4 or 5 world class players over the course of a season (Paul Stalteri notwithstanding), then went onto win the 2010-2011 league title or the season after, I'd feel very uncomfortable with that. What does that prove?
That throwing shitloads of money at a club and buying the best assets makes you successful? It's completely true, but why the fuck is that worth celebrating?
In real terms its not just a case of buying good players = success, but it bloody helps (Chelsea after Abramovich).Man City & Real are an interesting model for the coming seasons to test the water on this, and if more billionaires will come to cash-in on this success (speaking more about Man City model here).
I think long-term the danger is that clubs will follow the franchise model of American sports. Business over sport. The community and history of clubs overshadowed by takeover bids and billionaire grants providing "success". I would seriously have to question my love for football if this came to be the norm.
