I've seen this happen before, but only after a few people end up leaving around the same time. Boss told me this when I left my last job that I might be asked to leave earlier in an attempt to "diffuse" the interest of others leaving as well. I ended up staying the full two weeks, but others were cut loose early without explanation to the group.
Personally I think it is bad practice - especially bad for the relationships you might have built with co-workers. It appears as though you just left or were fired.
