My dad made me listen to captain beefheart growing up, so I kind of have an aversion. But I discovered Zappa of my own accord. I'd place Zappa way up there in the genius category. As a composer he's up there with some of the best classical guys.
He was also hilarious and a great social commentator.Also graphics wise, one of my favourite album covers ever:
