from my knowledge ... newstoday was initially brought as a url by jason. he had plans of selling it to a large corporation - in the same style as doctor.com etc - that was the rage back in the late 1990's. no one was interested, or should i say willing enough to pay what he was asking for the domain.
at the same time [late 90's] design portals were huge, k10k, h73, etc. so jason decided to evolve the url into a design portal. its first incarnation was very different from others. news on the "other" portals was restricted to the invities only but newstoday allowed others to broadcast live their own news - and also allowing for this forum style of interaction between designers etc.
initially it wasn't a "business" just the usual design portal but after time [and good on him] it has moved more into a business model and i would imagine now generating a good revenue.
