i enjoy the education and would rather read a book than watch most movies as i feel i am participating rather than idle.

To me, I actually feel that I am participating either way, but it also depends on how much of my imagination I use. To be honest, I do use my imagination more when reading books because (particularly as a visual learner), I need to picture everything in my head.
The perception is definitely that you are more active when reading books, but it's harder to determine if this is actually the case.
Like fans of Harry Potter, for example. Some loved the films for making things come to life; others hated the films because they felt uncomfortable or even violated from the changed perceptions and ideas of the entire HP universe resulting from the release of the films; these worlds originally molded by the reader.
