Should we really be killing people, who kill people, to teach that killing people is wrong?

No, we shouldn't. Not to be a fatalist about this, but seriously, this is something that will never change, ever. Some people/countries may change their ways, but there will always be a society or government that will do as they see fit, by any means necessary. This world is crowded, manifest destiny has brought us all together and we're searching for reasons not to make it work.Let the killing continue, for the simple reason that it just can't be stopped.
