Scientology seems to be good at success-oriented brainwashing. I once bought Dianetics for $0.25 and actually read some of it.
What I was impressed with, was how simple was English it was written in, with many obvious terms explained. Anyone would understand it. The concept of psychosomatic blocks called "engrams" and acheving the state of "clear" to unleash one's full potential seemed nothing new to me.
Their methods might be working for many people, hence popularity of the sect. That and the brilliant concept of celebrities acquisition.

Imagine nt without design celebs popping in from time to time, especially in its early days.. would it last till today? :)
