@ Sickman, flat beds are getting a lot better and for those of us who can't pop the $$k for a drum scanner they do pretty well.
you don't need a drum scanner to get better quality than a flatbed. a FILM scanner will best a flatbed easily, and will not cost 30,000, but you will need to drop ~1000. well worth it if you've got 1000s of pics
