i guess it depends on whether expectations are absolute+reactive or flexible+active.
sorry no i'm not going to go out with you on friday as i'm spoken for.
now if you had an absolute+reactive way of looking at the world you'd say aaarrrgh my expectation wasn't fulfilled. it must be because of me. even though she doesn't know a thing about me she thinks i'm not worth going out with and therefore i'm going to be upset.
however if you have a flexible+active approach to the world you'd say something like well the fact that she's spoken for has nothing to do with me. at least we've got some sort of communication going on. isn't the internets great? ahhhh look there's a baby polar bear
