I've found that it helps to hear someone instead of trying to figure it out phonetically. Also in a class, it gets you prepared to listen to it in conversation mode. Learning from a book won't help you when you go to the country and they just start talking rapidly.
As far as computer programs, I often have problems hearing the voice clearly, but that's just me.
