At one point, I'm sure Adobe had some viable competition. Probably not much, but some. So, like any other brand, it put its name out there, sponsored competitions, made itself available to schools, and looked the other way when it came to piracy. It understands that just flooding the market with Adobe will create a loyal following who will eventually purchase it when the time comes.

It's hard to make the case that competition really exists since they merged with Macromedia. "Competition" is largely a mythical concept because in the end, no company wants to have to compete against other companies. They want control over the market.

So now that Adobe has complete control, perhaps they will start cracking down on piracy. But probably not, somewhere in their business model, piracy is factored in. If it proved a liability, they would make a serious effort.

But looking at the backlash towards music and movie companies, Adobe would be smart not to push people towards creating more GIMPS or other programs that can seriously compete.
