just called another designer/friend close to where i live. he got a copy of techtool which i will try, if that does not work i'll go to another mac-user i know and install the MAXTOR on his computer and see if that works.
note about photoshop:
PS had serious trouble reading out a file, or even showing the preview in the "open" dialogue window, then i had to force quit, after that PS would only crash on startup everytime i tried. then files on that disk started to become inactive/dissappear.. then i rebooted which took ages and then when the finder was back up the disk was gone. completely gone.
