    I think its a lot to do with knowing when to say when. With unlimited budgets and tech at their disposal, each movie tends to resort to fx for the mere sake of it, like a 3d expo or demo of what can be done. Used in moderation you can pull some great stuff off when needed and it's that much more effective. LOTR Trilo was a good example. When called for, they pulled together some great FX but the entire movie wasnt some razzle dazzle hollywood show pony.
