I boxed my whole life...the best thing to do is find a GOOD gym, it can be a pro gym like palamino boxing club [on la brea in LA] or gleasons [nyc] or your local boys club. The problem with pro gym's is that they are full of pro's who want to 'work' and you quite possibly are not ready for it.
The real difference between a pro and someone who isn't, is that a pro will make you miss[slip punches] and then counter. The amatuer boxer can't deal with this and gets hurt in a pro gym. Remember the pro is just looking for some 'work' so if you agree to get in the ring with hi or her it's your fault.
I would start out with a two string bag. Get to a gym and learn a nice crisp one two [jab followed by an overhand right] Practise on your 2 string bag. It will teach you the mechanics how to move. Get ready to feel awkward.
nice 2 string on sale...
