Where the show failed (to me) is it was more or less a softcore porn / bloodbath built around a main story of greed and lust... basically a Daytime Melodram at best w/a shitload of eye candy that isn't always that 'sweet' but rather bitter / boring / overdone or just not done very well (granted—it has its moments).
There seemed to be a really cool backstory along w/creative technology ideas (the aliens? the tree? ...how things got to be the way they were from a science / science-fiction pov) but they didn't touch on that stuff much and instead packed it full of *family issues*.
Scrape all the sci-fi / eye candy out of it and you have 10 episodes of All My Children... bloody episodes w/lots of T&A (and shit acting)... merely a boring Soap Opera in the end.

It really nails the aesthetic of cyberpunk - b-grade acting, awkward dialogue, dull characters.
Also the music is bland as fuck.
But still a fun watch.

I wish they would have followed the structure of the book. Entirely possible to do within a miniseries.
To it's detriment, the show writers combined a few characters, removed some, elevated others and even made new ones.
I enjoyed first handful of episodes, but couldn't finish it.

I actually re-watched it on a lark this week, for the second time.
It really is awfully derivative. It's a wholesale kit-bash of every dystopian or cyberpunk film and novel you've ever watched and read. Just about every theme, scene, and concept I could identify from something I've seen or read before.
That said, the production really is beautiful. And the casting was largely good; the chemistry between characters was mostly enough for me to forgive the start-to-finish rip-offs and just enjoy the show.
- I dont mind the visual ripoffs because they were very well done, but storyline was lacking, by the time the sister shows up I was like wtf is this hahaMiguex
- Ah yeah, the sister thing was irritating.
I was speaking more of thematic, plot and conceptual rip-offs, though.Continuity

"...it felt like they allocated 99.9% of the shows resources to production / vfx and photography and the rest was spent on snacks and a little bit of a script"
Yup.

I couldn't get passed the second episode. I even watched both episodes twice. I feel like it had all the ingredients for a cool series, but the execution just bored me to tears.

Just finished the entire thing last night.
Prodcution / Art Direction of the show is mindblowing, specially for a series. I was constantly blown away by vfx and visuals, it's heavily inspired on bladerunner but still, really well done.I like the main guy, he was on this show "The Killing" (also on netflix) which was great.
The story of the show was lacking though, it felt like they allocated 99.9% of the shows resources to production / vfx and photography and the rest was spent on snacks and a little bit of a script.
After episode 5/ 6ish it's hard to continue but I finished because I was already in (kinda like what happened with lost).
Regardless is an incredible looking show.
What were your thoughts on it?
