I ditched my MBP and am on the verge of getting the surface book 2. It's not cheap but it is cheaper than a MBP with better spec. And education pricing is easy to come by. Plus, you get a tablet, which for the similar spec would be an extra 1k on top of the mbp.
I like the ease of apple OS but I'm bored of it and instead of it developing it seems to be lost. Windows isn't as slick looking but it gets things done the same / better in some cases. The one thing that is stopping me at the moment is that I use google for everything, and a swap to windows would really be better with a swap to microsoft too. Google really need to make a good pixelbook that supports adobe, then I'm done.
- I've been using computers for 35 years and I can't get my head around the concept of becoming 'bored by an OS'. Sounds like it's doing its job, in that case...detritus
- 35 years here too. I like new tech and change not same tech. Most would agree with you I'm sure, but I like to see what else there is.craigatkinson
- Windows is still ugly as hell...unfortunately :/yuekit
- there's a design change coming soon I think, looks nice from the preview shotscraigatkinson
- WinX is a weird mess of overly-minimal whitespace and then BAM! WAAAAY too many buttons on-screen. Explorer's a mess these days :(detritus
- yes, needs tidying. Apple are v good at making stuff look good along with over simplifying in some areascraigatkinson
- For file browsing and organization, OS X is far superior to windows.monospaced
- I use google drivecraigatkinson
- What mono said.ArmandoEstrada
- I do use Windows, and I can mentally make the switch, but it feels crippled in comparison.monospaced
- in what way crippledcraigatkinson
- thought you could get adobe products on chromebooksjaylarson
- I don't think so, not full versions anywaycraigatkinson
- The overall aesthetic of Windows still makes me feel like I'm trapped at a company meeting in a shitty cubicle office building.yuekit

Dell XPS is mega powerful
BUT the new HP Spectre x360 just came out with a fantastic new processor (wish I hadn't bought the previous model 5 months ago) i7 8560U - 8.6 on CPU Benchmark
Plus, the screen has digitiser tech, like a Wacom Cintiq (not AS good but I've done some illustration projects with it and great results)

There's nothing in the new MBPs that is appealing. The specs compared to the 2015 model aren't that improved, and the only changes are a mostly-useless touch bar and fewer ports.
If I were buying one personally, to use for real work, I would probably have to get a PC at this point. I simply don't see Apple making a laptop that makes perfect sense for creatives at this point.
- *** appealing to me ***monospaced
- I have MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and love it - the new MBP's are a big step backward imo, no SD, USB ports? ridiculousprophetone
- I have one of those too (work-issued). Can't imagine losing functionality in the new one.monospaced
- don't think i'd leave the apple ecosystem. the cost diff is not significant enough to warrant a changeGnash
- I just love how my new toucher mac drops wifi as soon as I plug anything into a c-port.see_thru
- ^ replace the cable with a longer one. some weird interference issues from what I understandGnash
- also, don't use cheap, unshielded cablesGnash

If you already use a nd like Apple stuff then buy another Apple —- who gives a fig what other people are using?
- Ooh, the lesser-spotted emdashhyphendash in the wild —- quick! take a photo before she flees!detritus
- I guess, but I see reviews saying the keyboards break and USB-C is a pain at the moment...Raniator
- would £1750 even buy an 15" macbook?hans_glib
- A refurb, yeah... I think.Raniator
- Go to a Mac Store and try the keyboard - I've read a lot of people like it, a lot hate it. Warranties should cover damage..! USB-C? Well... dongles :\detritus

Raniator,
What do you need the laptop for?
Video Production / Photoshop / Illustration / 3D / Music ?Different specs will suit different purposes

Dell XPS 15.
9550 is the older model that you can still buy some places.
I got one on the Dell Official Outlet last year - i7, 32gb Ram 1tb SSD, 4K touchscreen.
Got it for about £1500!The 9560 is the newer version and has a slightly faster processor but it is a lot ore money.
Beautiful laptops!
- These are 15" screen with a 14" footprint. Makes a big difference when you feel it beside a 15" laptop.microkorg

I'm with detritus... but i'm in the other side of the force ;)
I work on a PC workstation, and use my Surface Pro for its portabilty, and cos i can bring it and work (and draw) on Adobe CC with it
There are tons of nice machines in this price range

Higher end Lenovo thinkpads are worth a look.

"cope with anything I throw at it"
This needs further explained.

Surface Book 2 looks nice.

Dell XPS 15 is still the king and they have just upgraded their lineup. But MacBook Pro is still (for me) the #1 laptop because I need a unix OS and Adobe.
MacBooks hold their value pretty well, too. I'd choose between those two. Sadly Apples software quality is a bit behind nowadays. Every week new problems.. battery management, security, bricked after update :( And $$$ but we accept this already.
