Trying to set up Google Drive for desktop on a new computer. Found out that it's going away. Did anyone else who use it know this?

I believe that the Google Drive as a service will remain they just stop supporting the computer app

That sucks. It's a pretty big part of my workflow at home. But I guess since I just had an iMac delivered today, maybe it gives me reason to look into some other options. I keep a ton of stuff on Drive, mostly photos, haven't started using Google Photos yet (but certainly could).

They have just renamed and re-purposed it, it's not going anywhere - the desktop client is now called Backup and Sync, your existing Drive app should eventually update and switch over to the new version.
If you go to your Google Drive page, via a browser, you should be able to download the new client.
- On Windows at least - dunno about OSX.face_melter

Never really used the desktop app...
Don't think you will miss much if you stick with the browser.- < thismonospaced

So, thinking through this a bit more... my main concern is how I've been managing photos, so it might be reason to start storing all my photos for Lightroom on the iMac, and use Lightroom Sync to make them available on different devices.
- this sounds like a good ideaGnash
- That's how I set up mine.

All synced. Although you have to create a collections every time... might be (minor) annoying.pango - Although whatever photo taken or upload to my phone or iPad, gets automatically copied to LR mobile sync. Convenient.pango
- Although = also...pango

Use Transmit 5 to log in to your Google Drive and Dropbox accounts?

Its just called backup and restore now. Same function / better maybe. There is no drive folder as such now. You just tell it which folders you want to upload from your computer. They’re still stored in google drive, just not in a ‘drive’ folder.
