Hey I have a MBP Retina (mid 2012) and I'm looking to upgrade,
the new MBP laptops look a bit disappointing for professional use in terms of performance speed and lack of connectivity.

I'm not ready to switch to PC yet, but I've been holding on buying a new laptop thinking that Apple will release something decent but most updates seem to be purely cosmetic.

Anyone has experience with external video cards?

I need considerable render speed and the ability to run at least 2, ideally 3 external displays (+ Laptop one).

Pictured above is the Bizon box, which offers multiple options, looks big as hell, was hoping to get something smaller but truth is the amount of adaptors I will need to carry around if I get a new mbp is probably going to be just as bulky

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Bizon buying Akitio Thunder 2, adding a $20 Dell power supply to cater for better cards, slapping a logo and if they're honest, "assembled in Russia" on it and selling it on at a hefty markup?

Or maybe it's how they started, I see they have more models now that seem to be their own.

Anyway, I would probably go go with Akitio Node - Thunderbolt 3, 400W PSU, should work with Thunderbolt 2 (but check compatibility lists and forums to make sure it does).

    • I went looking into all this and it turns out there's a ton of compatibility issues that still need ironing outmonospaced

I only know about Bizon because I've read in forum that similar products have compatibility issues with MacbookPros.

I can't correct you on anything because you might be right, this is completely new to me, I don't know anything about hardware I just want a fast mac laptop and started to looking for options that will work till apple releases something decent again.

    • Bear in mind egpu only speeds up graphics, this is mainly useful in 3d and video.rafalski

I think all the effort and $ you'd put into making an external card work on a MBP would be better spent on a Hackintosh or just a good Windows laptop that does what you need.

  • Miguex0

If you know oh a reliable hackintosh laptop that will run with no problems, please share it with me.

I have looked into that as well and it's at least 1k over whatever the bizon box cost. But I'm afraid that much money on a hackintosh because I have no experience with hardware, this bizon box, at least works over en existing macbook that already works fine, just needs speed.

    • oh man, I meant a Hackintosh OR a Windows laptop ... but from what I read, external bizon box is not a simple plug-n-play thing, it's hugely problematicmonospaced
    • really? I thought it would be a 1/4 of the problems of building a hackintosh...
ok now I'm not so inclined to get it

I thought external options like these were not viable as whatever speed/power the external components have, you'll still be limited by the chord capacity to transfer the flow of data?

If render is your main issue, check ashsthorp website, he has a nice build with amazon links.
    $$$ tho.

    • Thanks for the info, I can't seem to find it, but I'm guessing its probably windows based and not a laptop.Miguex
    • Even MacBook Air 11"s with Thunderbolt 1 turn into gamer computers with egpu.rafalski

Thinking about this, if you want a future proof (your Mac is 5 years old) machine with a beefy CPU and horsepower (pro use), want/need to power 3 external displays plus a 4th, any laptop is going to be disappointing. Seems like you actually need a desktop to do all that and still be economical.

    • I take it to run shows, laptop are fine. I just want to get the fastest mac laptop I canMiguex

"I'm guessing its probably windows based and not a laptop."
Yeah it's not a laptop, but I thought regarding your work that most of your rendering needs weere happening before you fly out to festivals and play your set no? Once your assets are created you don't need that much power, do you?

If you really want a laptop, boxx has some good options :

Running windows I'm afraid... but I guess you will have to make the shift at some point. Might as well do it when you need to change your equipment.

    • it's for shows and I need it to fit on my travel case, laptop is not an option. And my software runs on mac, so all this info is great for a rendering desktopMiguex
    • but I need something else right nowMiguex
    • sorry I meant, desktop is not an option.Miguex

not sure about anyone else, but my 2017 MBP is a beast.. as for connectivity it has 4 USB C ports, which dongles aside, is a welcome change to the 2 USB that my 2011 had..

I have yet to really put it thru its paces, but there hasn't been a single thing I have thrown at it so far which is hasn't utter crushed.

granted the $4500 AUD I had to shell out to get it wasn't that welcome, but as a laptop, its fucking owning it

    • that's great to hear!
      which one did you get?

    • that's actually not so bad ($3500US)... how much RAM?PonyBoy

    bump
Trying to find time to do more 3d -C4D- and I would like to give a try to redshift. but this only work with nvidia cards

    1. buy a mac book and hook it to a bizon box solution.
    2. buy a pc laptop with a nivida card (thinking about a dell inspirion or a boxx? nice but $$$)

I'd have to buy a proper version of cinema4d so at this moment I can swap PC/Mac. only thing is that I hate PC environment (I was PC only until 2007 and the windows vista debacle)

^ maybe this review could help:

    his channel is good too.

    thanks^
thanks! interesting video. the cons of a PC like this one are still pretty annoying. do you think I would have better luck with a dell or boxx? I value a lot not having to dig forums for hours in order to just make something work.

If only Apple could come up with a viable solution. I'm ok to trade performance for a better build and reliability overall, but with current apple offers you can't even run the softwares.... :/

    • Windows 10 is fine - i've run it with C4D for over two years and had zero problems. Even my machine at work with Win7 has been fine for almost four.face_melter
