My first console was a 2600.
Used to rock asteroid, PAC man, space invaders and pitfall for hours before we got a Nintendo, then sets and finally a PlayStation. What I appreciated the most about the Atari system was the limited graphics. An almost abstract artistic expression that truly tweaked the imagination.
Games now fill in every blank imaginable in regard to design and experience. I understand there are some gems and absolutely appreciate the hard work that goes into these "worlds," but I can't help hoping that maybe one of these systems will bring some of that vague open canvas mentality back rather than filling in all the white space.
Wonder how this new machine will do:

so what is it?
- Not sure yet. Just saw this teaser. Hope for the best, but we shall see.antimotion
- Personally I think they're gonna make a new console. Hopeful thinking I suppose, the the throwback/retro alternative seems pointless.monospaced
- If it's anything like the Atari of old, it will be a ramshackle box of piss.face_melter

i'll be disappointed if it's just an emulator with old atari games.
as far as recent games, all they've really got is like deer hunter, neverwinter nights and dragonball z games. i guess the witcher was atari also.
if it's another console that isn't based on exclusives it'll be born redundant
- they only licensed their name to put the atari logo on those games ... I don't even think they had much to do with them at allmonospaced
- Atari haven't made games in decades - the name was used as a publisher. Witcher is wholly owned by CD Projekt Red.face_melter

it'll take a major feat of rebranding to shake their association with extremely outdated games and super lo-fi graphics...
the woodgrain on the box makes me think they're banking on nostalgia. i wonder where they're gonna go with that.

I have my atari jaguar still, doesnt work though

I think it can go either way:
Bank on nostalgia by putting out pixellated 8/16-stylee new game, or ...
Put out a machine that cranks out far better graphics than what Sony, Ninentdo or MS are doing right now.
If they decided to simply match the competition in graphics quality and not try to surpass them, then it will go nowhere, I think.
In any case, I'm justifiably curious.

probably a little 2600 like the mini famicom
- Too much teaser BS just for that.Continuity
- I agree with Continuitymonospaced

the memories of atari and raging against the tv

I wonder if this has anything to do with the movie Ready Player One.
- Hmm that's a good call... I think the logo is also the first thing you see in new bladerunner trailer...antimotion
- Definitely marketing the hell out of that era... surprised there hasn't been some GO-bots craziness "revisioned" as they say.antimotion
- I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was a tie-in marketing for that film.monospaced

When this launches, is anyone interested in an Atari launch party? Rooftop NYC? I'm thinking jacuzzi and dancers included.

I just remembered the Ouya was a thing.

- Nice looking box, but I don't have much nostalgia for this.DRIFTMONKEY
- love the designscarabin_net
- I wonder if it will actually look like this.monospaced
- Assuming it's got a Pi or whatever inside, they should join up with local hackerspaces and sell the design so people can make 'emdetritus
- Shell is easily 3d-printable or laser-cuttable, fascia a simple CNC job.detritus
- "..they should.." as in it's a terrible business idea and it'd never happen.detritus
- I'd love to do an interface that uses LEDs through a thin wooden laminate frontagedetritus
- . o O ( a Pi '4x +simple GPU' would make a f'n great base for DIY consoles )detritus
- It's the zombie corpse of Atari - all they want is money. It will be mobile phone innards with a cheap controller.face_melter
- Looks cool, is retarded. NO ONE wants old Atari games in console form. They sucked then, they suck now (even more).section_014

My Atari 2600 still works and I often buy used games from eBay.
Why would I buy this?
- Continuity2
It's a beautiful box. Actually, it's magnificent. But all of that effort, all of that fuss for — basically — a glorified emulator? Meh.
Now, if they had announced 'ATARI IS BACK', like, for real, with killer hardware and new titles, I would have jumped on this.
