Last night I was thumbing through a niche industry mag and I regressed into my Jr Designer mindset - this ad sucks, that ad sucks, I want to tell them their ads suck and I can do better.Has anyone landed a new client by discussing their ads, and how they can be improved?
some of the problems are basic shit (like me).... dark blue text on black backgrounds... some of it looks like their web team did their print ads...
I wonder if there's a solid communication strategy that will help them... see the light

Telling them shit they already know gets annoying

mmm... that might be like trying to show Trump supporters how stupid they are...
Typically, if you see someone rolling around in shit, its probably because they want to.
Understand what I'm sayin?

Offer positive alternatives, not criticism.
Your opinions, even though you are a designer, are still worth shit.

They also probably got what they were willing to pay for. Meaning, unless you want to get peanuts, they probably aren't going to be willing to pay your fee.

anyone can criticize. It's usually like that for a reason: shitty stakeholder feedback, requirement, etc.

This has always been the paradox of clients:
You don't want to work for a client that has shitty stuff: it's like that for a reason.
But the clients with nice work already, they don't need you.

Welll...... i did get my first job at Sony Music by creating what i thought were better rollout packages for artists already on their roster. They were already hiring a design position. But i edged out everyone else with that approach. Later on, i ended up working people people who also interviewed for that job, one of which was definately more experienced than i was at the time. So, it can work. I wouldn't waste your time if they aren't hiring.
- That's cool to hear... way to stand by your work. Good point, the client might not be looking around for a new marketing companycanoe
