I doubt many of you here use this, but just so you know if you do:

Wix has just acquired DeviantArt for $36M. Bully for them!

However, it looks like a part of the deal is that Wix will allow content uploaded to and hosted on DeviantArt over the years to be used by their web-building customers in their own sites = some schmo building a site for their company can use all your assets without your permission or without paying you. Bummer!

This might not come to pass, but if this at all affects you, you might want to check your ToS.

"Second, Wix will open up DeviantArt’s repository of art and creative community to the Wix platform, giving Wix’s users access to that work to use in their own site building."

"If you're not paying - you're the product".

The modern [sub-] social internet's a big crock of shit, imho.

The only thing a DeviantArt user can do is to delete their content, shut their account, and leave the site.

The policies only apply for the "Term" in which a user exists and the art exists on the platform.

    • < yes, i forgot to mention that!detritus
    • haha, from the HN comments, which I assume you've seen: "Website builder Wix acquires terrible amateur hentai repository DeviantArt for a $36M loss" :Ddetritus
    • Ahaha yes :)) I still can't understand what's the business in this for wix unless they want to use their system to create artist portfolios for example.sted

time to start closing my deviant art account.

    • it would be worth keeping an eye on things first — the above might not come to pass exactly.. but it looks like that's the intention.detritus

Kinda shitty. I suppose people can upload & re-upload their work with watermarks on it, but I always hated doing that. Pretty much defeats the purpose of putting any effort into your art, to then slap a hideous water mark on it, but it would deter theft of usage. Plus, for users with huge back logs of work, re-uploading art would be a full time job. Such a scummy move.
