Crowdsourcing via Job Application

I'm applying for a full time UX/UI job.

Submitted my CV, just been told by the recruitment agency that I've been successful and that I have an interview next week.

However... I've a bit of 'homework' 'designer exercises' to do before that.

Has anybody ever experienced this before?

I'm seeing it as crowdsourcing and collecting ideas for a new landing screen for their app.

    Or am I overthinking it?

Surely if my CV and website samples that were on it were good enough they wouldn't be wanting me in for interview?

You're overthinking it. It's through a recruitment agency so they think they can make you jump through hoops because they're paying $$$. I've seen this before from an recruiter, never directly from a company. If you don't feel comfortable with it, don't do it.

If they are just blanket asking everyone to do the exercise then it is unfair.

But if they are asking a group that they've narrowed down then that's fair enough. They want to see how you work, your thinking and probably how you present.

The brief should not be a live one as that WOULD be taking the piss. Usually a company will make up a brief or use a brief they had from their past projects.

CV and website examples could be made up. Say you were applying for a CD position for example you might have a shitload of sites etc in your folio but never did shit in any of them other than come up with an idea. Junior designers and UX folk did all the real thinking in the project and coders built it.
And if they are looking for a "do-er" rather than a "say-er" then you're not their guy - but they'd never know that just from looking at a CV and website links.

Yeah I suppose I could say I did all the websites myself, which I have since I've been running my own business for the past ten years. Guess they have to take my word for it?
