Against.
- prophetone2
Not CP style so totally against it, and stuff.
- since19790
We invited the strippers: JFK and Stalin.
I guess, yeah.
- ?monospaced
- oh, the comic, got itmonospaced
- this is how I would go about writing about the 2 strippers anywayssince1979
- cannonball19780
Can't we just decide to use or not use depending on how it needs to fit the meaning?
- I guess. I'm trying to hold a firm position. Like Roe vs Wade.since1979
- since19790
I held a firm position but then I finished. Now my position is more or less slumping.
- i_monk1
Totally for it.
- monkeyshine2
How could you be a civilized human and be against it?
- Gnash2
for it. anything that aids in clarifying meaning and/or intent is good.
- set0
Why would anyone be against it?
'muricans?
- People have had enough of grammar. Time to take back control of our language from the literate elite.Fax_Benson
- People are fucking stupidset
- Some people think it goes against the rules so it's a discussion.since1979
- drgs-2
Against.
English is the only language using it. It belongs in the same drawer with MM/DD/YYYY, 12 hour time and measuring the world with stones and bodyparts.- I was in the middle of formulating a response to this but then I figured it was far easier just to call you an idiotset
- Though that date format is certainly moronicset
- you see? you cant even back it updrgs
- Here's one backup - http://www.qbn.com/r…set
- Here's another -
http://helveticka.co…set - ...but judging by your comment in the first example, you don't even understand it.set
- So what's the point?set
- you use comma between words which are not joined by "and"
if you use both comma and "and", you have two joints, which is unnecessarydrgs - but you're still not understanding the huge difference in meaning when not using the oxford commaset
- As someone who clearly has no understanding of it's importance, I can see why you might be against it.set
- you have lost this intellectual debatedrgs
- As much as you may like to convince yourself of that, the reality is quite evidently the opposite.set
- there are good reasons for not using it too, and honestly, if there's some kind of massive confusion either way, you should just reword what you're sayingmonospaced

1. I love my parents, Lady Gaga and Humpty Dumpty.
2. I love my parents, Lady Gaga, and Humpty Dumpty.
- 2.chukkaphob
- every civilized languages chooses 1, except englishdrgs
- Why would an Oxford comma apply to a language other than English? Intonation and phrasing is wildly different across all spoken languages.face_melter
- Not to mention grammar and sentence construction.face_melter
- they're both correct, depending on what it is you're saying. why is this so difficult?Fax_Benson
- haha - drgs is totally missing the point hereset
- Throwing commas into Swedish would just make you look like a clown. The pauses are in the words.face_melter
- in germanic languages -- no it isntdrgs
- basically youre saying grammar is different between langauges, because grammar is differentdrgs
- lol.since1979
- You're transposing English punctuation into languages that aren't English or even remotely built or as flexible as English.face_melter
- It makes no sense whatsoever.face_melter
- i speak norwegian, english and russian fluently + some german.
english is the least flexibledrgs - And yet everyone speaks it.detritus
- because american culture is dominant and the language is easy to learn
no other reasonsdrgs - the two examples in this post should be
1. I love my parents Lady Gaga and Humpty Dumpty.
2. I love my parents, Lady Gaga and Humpty Dumpty.drgs - You're still missunderstandingset
- i know the cases where you have these "pairs" which blend in within the list otherwise, but the rule does not "scale"drgs
- what if you have "triplets" which you need to differ from the parent list? etc
what if you have three lists each consists of 5 words, how do you join them all?drgs - http://i.imgur.com/p…set
- the oxford comma is an attempt on hierarchical unions, but it does not generalize. so either have something that works or dont use it at alldrgs
- Humpty Dumpty is a fictional character, he is not the father.
#wakeupsheepleORAZAL - dunno about english, but in french you never put a "," before a "and"Bennn
- and we always put a "," before a "but"Bennn
- Ben est sociable mais négatif.ORAZAL
- used to do 1, now I do 2.section_014
- ^ another one missing the point. Someone put them out of their misery. Please.set
- drgs, no, you do NOT speak English fluently if you pick 1. LOL! Your parents are NOT Lady Gaga and Humpty Dumpty, are they? LMAO!!!chukkaphob
- drgs-4
one, two and three
what is the problem exactly? you need extra help to separate words in a list?put your fingers on each word on your screen, and "hold" them, so that you dont confuse them
- all aboard the stupid train. next stop, drgs' house.Fax_Benson
- that's one side of the argument, drgssince1979
- Who's going to explain to this numbnut what he's missing?set
- fanx for the lol thoughset
- since19790
I don't know, sometimes I'm feeling Drugs. It's like, why fuck with standardization?
A reader is supposed to know the a,b conjunction C format of the bat.
Why muddle it up when a colon could be used?
But, F it. I will abide by the Oxford way. I agree it cleans it up considerably. It's fine.

I'd be all-in for a thread about the nuances of comma usage ... but only after people have nailed down your/you're and there/their/they're, and have finally mastered the correct use of the apostrophe.
- lol every 2nd bar misuses the apostrophe. I cringe every time.mekk
- < hear here! :PBuddhaHat
- your right two many people out their, dont know the basicsFax_Benson
- your not wrong, but I am.set
- I regret that I only have one upvote to give.CyBrainX
- And stop using literally in every other sentence FFS. Wake up sheepleyuekit
- Yep. People have forgotten the meaning of literally, and instead just use it for emphasis.set
- This figuratively drives me nuts.ORAZAL
- Lolterry_cloth
- literally: https://www.youtube.…Krassy

I remember learning about this the first time I was taught about commas. Maybe 1st or 2nd grade. Any time I used it my teachers would "correct" me. So, I haven't used it since the early 70s.
I am old.
