I am going to be working on a pretty big website redesign. The site is a web-to-print business that operates similar to moo in functionality only.

The basic functionality is you can pick one of our pre-designed templates and add your own photos, text etc. The current process is built in flash and very clunky. Too many features, slow, etc.

What are some good questions to ask the users to gain valuable feedback?

Hard to say w/o context to the actual company, business goals, existing user behavior, users' desired end-state, etc. I guess those are topics to start out with! ;)

    • Misread and thought you needed client questions. Don't ask users about business goals ;)studderine

I would break down user research questions into two groups:

    1. Existing Users
    2. New Users

Audit the existing user's experience with regards to ease of use (can I find what I need), core experience (is it easy to perform these tasks when creating), and feature improvements (what's missing, what needs to be added.)

For new users ask if the sign in/up experience is clear, do I understand what this product does, are the product features (ease of use) easy and clear.

Align those with the current strategy and you'll be well on your way. I also like to consider/pitch to the business a bit of A/B testing strategy into the plan. Design different elements and see if you can sell them on testing.

    • Good list! Keep in my mind, don't ASK people what they want. Rather understand their goals and give them what they need.studderine

So right now we have a specific niche. The current web to print service builds calendars which is a season business.

The owner of the company wants to offer other printing services, business cards, postcards, etc.

Our user base is 40-60 years old.

    Hope this provides some insight

    • Raises the question: will existing users do this? Will new users users this over larger, more well-known printers?studderine

    • Agree with @studderine - IMHO, your statement 'The owner of the company wants to offer other printing services, business cards, postcards, etc'...see_thru
