It's never really interested or intrigued that much until I heard Duncan Trussell talking about it, and then him and Joe Rogan. Not only the possibilities and direction it can take with gaming but the philosophical and evolutionary implications as well.
I highly recommend listening to this podcast with Trussell and Rogan... (download it, the media player is shite)

..and if you enjoy that, they talk a lot about it in this one too.
Fascinating stuff. The future is going to be interesting, and it's not far off...

It has some part where they talk about wasting time with vr while traveling in space?

You could watch a recent episode of 'Click' on the BBC which has a wonderfully-encouraging use of AR by NASA, to help teams working on the likes of Mars rovers and such.
.
Where VR's concerned - someone here made a great comment that made me stop in my tracks and think deep for a while, in relation to this video..
Something along the lines of "Raves in the future are going to be amazing".
I don't think I'd ever really considered that sort of level of social VR interaction in a closed space. And yes, raves in the future are going to be fucking mental. As too might just common or garden daily life.
- Yeah that's why I was asking that question about the space travel and VR :) anyways NMS is amazing with vive :Dsted
- Oh you bastard, don't! I've a Vive on my list, but i've a lot else to buy beforehand, annoyingly.detritus
- I didn't eat for 3 months to buy it. Just kidding :) arrived a week ago but I am still not sure if it was worth it to be honest... i have to get a better gpu.sted

The current state of VR sucks. I went to a thing a few weeks ago and tried Oculus and Google Cardboard. It's essentially strapping a fucking cellphone to your face.
The resolution sucks and I felt nauseous afterwards. Really needs to improve at a rapid rate.
- Cardboard is literally strapping a cellphone to your face, so that's a bit of a poor comparison. Which version Oculus did you try?detritus
- Given how inherent the limitations are, I was quite impressed by my Cardboard experience, but I know that's not the end-game, by a very long shot...detritus
- ...it was intended, from the off, to be a quick and dirty means to try the general experience and perhaps play with some basic dev.detritus
- I didn't know there were different versions of Oculus. I tried whatever they had at the Beta event I attended...sorry don't know more than thatsublocked

Hoping Magic Leap is going to be lightyears ahead of both of those options.

Anyone done anything with VFX in 360 or VR yet?
Looks like the Mettle plugins are standard, any thoughts?

i'm considering this my go-to thread for future VR discussion.
i'm particularly interested in how it's being used as a marketing campaign tool in the film industry

here they used it to promote "the martian"

incidentally, it's the most trash-talked VR offering in the playstation store

New headset from Lenovo looks promising..
http://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets…
Also, the new Snapdragon processor/SoC has improved motion tracking latency for VR..
- Not sure how the landscape's developing where 120Hz refresh rates are concerned, but once they've got that down (and cheap) this shit's going to go bananas.detritus

- Apparently I meant 240Hz.detritus
- VR's in a good position in that a lot of the underlying tech is the same as phones, so if VR remains niche for a while, it'll still benefit from mass industrydetritus
