Has anyone here had any reasonable success building an app? Or finding coders who really know what they are doing? I hope to find someone with the ability to take (an idea) a pretty good written logic and make it a reality.

I have found that there are plenty good devs out there... reasonable speed, logical... capable of making your ideas a reality as long as you are capable of filling their pockets w/appropriate compensation.
What issues are you running into with the devs you've been in contact with? Are you willing to pay for quality work or are you looking at things strictly from your bottomline?

What do you guys think it would take to build something like YELP? 5k, 10k, 20K?
- more like 40k (don't think that it's just an app... )sted
- multiple people, million+ at least. unlimited hot pockets and buzz cola.dorf

- Yelp is a 2 billion dollar company. I think you're missing a few zeros from your estimates.monNom

- Yelp would be in the £150k area!HAYZ1LLLA
- No matter how much would it cost to build. If you make "something like" an existing app, it's totally worthless.sr_rosa
- I thinki he means, how much would cost to built an app with the complexity of Yelp. Not what the company is worth (yelp) or necessarily the same app, 70-100 kvalentim

Doesn't necessarily have to be millions.
Depends how you tackle it. Start simple and small then you can grow to add more funcitonality if the original version is a success.
It'll mean less risked investment.

Do you have a market/audience already?
As well as building the site or app you'll need to put aside money for marketing - getting people to know about your app (in-app advertising, online ads, blogs, magazines etc etc) and the REALLY difficult part - getting them INSTALL your app.

I'll do it for 20/20 ($20k/20% company stake), pending review of your business proposal, executive team, and financiers. Have your attorney send over any non-competes/non-disclosures and we'll get started.
Actually, never mind I just remembered the average life expectancy of a human.

Sepends what your building, what language and for what platform.
Coding is hard and time management is nearly always overlooked/hurried. Happy coder means a decent code base which you can build out on.
If I had the money and in your shoes I'd invest in a mid-upper coder with an producer with coding background. Also read up on the agile coding practice. My opinion the best approach.
Also what libarares will you be using? QT/ swift etc.

Ok first of all, we need to clarify some stuff here. Building an app and reasonable success are two different things. The success of an app depends on the marketing, ability to rescale and understandable pricings.
Then, if someone with experience tells you your idea is not going to work you need to accept it or work on a compromise.
And last, always remember the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes" when you have a meeting. Let me know if you want a skype talk or soemthing like that, I have been coding for 34 years now and can at least be an advisor for you.- 34 years of experience?!!? how the hell do you charge for that?Maaku
- Actually I don't ask for much when the job is interesting and I like the working conditions.coldarchon

I will build you YELP for $50k USD 16 weeks buildtime.
All ballpark until scope of work defined etc.
Need the data - clean data. Or if its user generated, fine.
Need good wireframes, 30% upfront, we can talk more if you are serious.
