Hey,
My MacBook Pro is probably on its deathbed. I need a new laptop, and I strongly consider going back to PC (for various reasons, price being the biggest).
Use: daily use / Adobe PS, AI, ID, PR / Ableton Live 9.
- Durable enough to take with you on a daily basis.
- Agreeable designSuggestions?
Thanks :)

Dell XPS 13, Asus ZenBook (the new Zenbook 3 is like a MacBook but with an i7)
Don't buy Sony, they are crap. Lenovos last long but they don't really have an ultraportable powerhouse in the ThinkPad look..
Sadly most powerful ultrabooks don't have a dedicated GPU Anymore and the MBP option is ridiculously overpriced. If you want that I suggest the Razer Blade.

Anything with dedicated GPU

If you use it every day (for work?), why not just buy Apple? They aren't that expensive. PCs are frustrating.
Business expense?

Dell XPS 13/15 is a gorgeous laptop, amazing screen, built well, light, etc. By far the best I've seen, easily rivals Apple for build quality, much better screen (and it's touch). You can get some pretty crazy specs w/ it too.
The Surface Book is pretty amazing too and can eliminate the need for a tablet, if you need one. Build quality is great. It's kinda fun to have a gorgeous, giant tablet there.
Those are the two I know, but Asus and even HP is making some pretty nice ones these days. Apple's lost a lot of ground by being so slow to upgrade (imho).
Go to BestBuy and play with them, both of these are there.
- have they sorted out the Surface's 'quirks' yet? Otherwise it's supposed to be a fantastic machine.detritus
- i regret not getting a surface (got MBP). use for PS & AI would be great...umbee54
- I think the biggest complaint I read was that it is top heavy, but it's a tablet w/ battery, hard to avoidformed
- Biggest complaint about the Surface is that it costs more than a MBP.nb
- But, it is a nice piece of ace.nb
- It's the same price as a MBP, but you get a tablet/touchscreen on top.zarkonite

Resale value on mac laptop are mush better, I can still get £350 on eBay for mine at the moment which goes some way for buying a new one, plus to get the best of both worlds, and can run OS X and windows.
- I hear this a lot, and it might swing things for a personal machine, but I'd rather buy a computer I wanted to work on than consider it's worth in two years.detritus

- does nobody remove those fucking stickers on the case ever? holy shitmonospaced
- That's not my actual laptop, mono...its from da interwebs :PGM278
- still..monospaced
- That is why you get a mac. No stickers!VectorMasked
- no, but a lot of people do prefer the mac because the single-piece aluminum case is quite beautiful and feels very sturdy, and there its price is reflectedmonospaced
- ^ yep still by far the most beautiful laptop even if high specs are pricey I'd always go for it - business expense.fadein11
- well for no anyway.fadein11

- point I was making is that it turns out the machined aluminum is actually the biggest contributor to the price, not overpriced electronicsmonospaced

How is the software supported for ios? I am looking at getting an ipad pro and currently it would be a better/faster situation than my old desktop. But the key is software support and I don't know how much adobe and ableton have made their stuff mobile friendly. Like formed mentioning the surface, i'm wondering what the ipad pro can bring to the party...
- It can't run full versions of anything. Apple gambled big on it having iOS vs. OSX, dumb mistake imho. So it's just a big ipad, the surface is a true PCformed
- i know companies are trying to make better apps: lightroom is close. but most mobile apps are pretty weak. boo™jaylarson
- It's still miles off though. They should have just called it iPad Big.section_014

Sager is awesome. Only downside is the black likes to be a fingerprint magnet. But the best hardware and completely customizable.

"30 days No Dead Pixel Guarantee"jaylarson - huh never even gave that much thought. i've never had a dead pixel before that i know of. but really great bang for buck with customizationdeathboy
- Really Dead Pixels tend to be evident from first turn-on. Dead Pixels that arise afterwards can usually be fixed.detritus

Is the surface book 2 / XPS still the top Windows laptop for adobe / heavy batch image processing?

my mac pro trash can died last week, I picked this up and am actually setting it up now, 1/2 the price of my trash can w/ a little more speed. fuck you apple.
MSI GE73VR Raider-066
- my only gripe is i have to start using office again for docs, no more apple pages.GuyFawkes
- whats the build quality like? I dont know anything about themcraigatkinson
- And they have 1060 / 70's, which shit all over Apple's choice of GPU's.face_melter
- the build is solid, i just got done installing CC and wanted to see how quick AE launched? holy shit, it was instantaneous, my trash can took like 10-15 secsGuyFawkes
- launching Media encoder for the first time on my mac it always went through loading all this random shit, taking a few minutes, it was instantaneous on the MSIGuyFawkes
- so far im stoked (though i havent actually started working on it yet) still going through this thing trying to optimize for performance and killing bloatwareGuyFawkes
- web fonts look like ass in web browsers though, all jagged n shit, im not sure whats up with thatGuyFawkes
- isn't there a cleartype toggle somewhere in the fonts menu?jaylarson
- Hit 'start' and just type "cleartype'. It'll show as "Adjust ClearType Text".ETM
- Don't use office, use google docs!zarkonite
- I recommend google docs/sheets instead of officeset
- Damn zarkonite. Snapset
- Agree on Google docs. Also, weren't there like 8-12 cores on the Mac Pro? I thought those were ace for video, albeit shit for gaming where a 1070 shines.monospaced
- thanks guysGuyFawkes
- I have a 17" msi for gaming. it's a couple years old now but it's fast and runs battlefront II just fine (albeit on slightly lower settings)SteveJobs
- Why the fuck is the track pad not centered? That would bug the shit out of me.elahon
- its positioned to the left because gamers use a mouseGuyFawkes

Trying to use Windows. Finder (not sure what its called) '3d Objects' folder. Settings upon settings...I like options but this is like the opticians, with / without, 1 or 2, 2 with / without, or 3?
Too much...
- It's literally a two step process to remove that folder. Open regedit, delete entry.zarkonite
- Two unintuitive steps nobody would ever do unless someone told them the trick.monospaced
- Not all parts of the OS are customizable, which is true of every software. It's too bad your personal tastes require more work, I guess it's not that importantzarkonite
- if you can't be bothered to do a simple operation like that.zarkonite
- and by "someone told them the trick" do you mean "the first result from google"?zarkonite

- Spend £100 more and get an iPad Pro.
I can't think of a single justification to get this none-PC 'laptop'.Nairn - ..unless, of course, it's possible to gut it and install Linux?Nairn
- Or, you know, if you want an actual laptop. Tablets are pointless these days, imho.formed
- 'an actual laptop' being something that can run 'actual software', which Chromebooks do not? If you're wanting a toy for drawing on, buy a good one.Nairn
- Spend £100 more and get an iPad Pro.
