if you want to change the icon itself, hit command-i on the item you want to change, click on the icon itself in the info panel and paste any image you want in there (1024x1024 is their default size).

I've tried it with the Downloads Fodler that you can see above the actual Downloads folder where it has its own icon, it doesn't work though, just defaults to the standard folder.

I read a bit fast over your question.
googling it...I found where the default icons are buried in the system, but this are the default icons of osx.

Hmmm not as easy as i thought, I wonder how dropbox and creative cloud gets around it if they are outside the operating system of OSX?
