What aIf exporting .jpgs, what image quality do you usually use? Maximum and high look the same most of the time but the size can be up to double.

save for web 75%

How about knowing how many colors to set a .gif to?

Different images will compress differently. Evaluate the quality vs size on a case by case basis.

There are some great services that can help you display the best quality images possible. I like:

For jpg I use save for web at 30-60% and double the dimensions for retina displays.

for jpegs I start looking at 10%-15% and then move up if needed.

If you're considering responsive images @2x, etc, read this:

It's an argument for stronger compression for 2x assets.
- Heard about this and did my own testing. It's BS. You get ugly posterization/colour shifts at high compression.monNom
- JPG actually blurs the image to compress it more so you're doubling blurry pixels. Might work for some specific cases, but try it with a sky. uglymonNom
- better to scale up high-quality IMO. it's a little blurry but colour fidelity is way better. And it seems like browsers will sharpen after resize.monNom
- Interesting. I've had excellent results with typical white-background product photos. I can see how a gradient or sky would not work as well.nb
