Been working on this project for about two years now...

    http://www.chrisdarmon.com/NBA-D…

Currently looking for one or two Cinema 4D animators... I can pay you in toys if you can help me out. These will retail for about $40 a piece via Mindstyle in China. They launch in September and officially licensed by the NBA.

I have the Lebron figure rigged and weighed if anybody is interested in helping launch a product and pitch a videogame to the NBA. Was a ton of work, need help >>> chris (at) cirquemedia.com

    • No. This one:

      OZARAL
    • no... dude likes to post and talk about his work... I'm not buying that he actually wants anyone to 'help' him... this is another 'look at my stuff' thread.PonyBoy

  • PonyBoy4

actual licensed product for the NBA and you're only willing to offer 'toys'...

    • all that means is you pay a licensing fee to NBA. you could do the same.Gnash
    • Mindstyle owns the license, I am a "licensor", that is how some businesses work bro.obey_pdx
    • i know biz too, bro. mindstyle doesn't own the license - they are a licensor.Gnash
    • if you look at your contract I would guess you are actually not a licensor but contractor.Gnash
    • they may well be licensing your art for the product, but that doesn't make you a licensor.Gnash
    • I've been working with them for nearly two years now... It's licensee and licensor... In my specific case. The end.obey_pdx

What ever happened with that flaming hoop law suit?

  • _niko5

    shine on you crazy diamond.

  • face_melter7

    'pay you in toys'

Let's all remember this shall we. Someone has offered to reward another's skill and experience with worthless plastic tat. Not even 'exposure' or publicity, but plastic junk.

Fuck you and the balloon you floated in on.

What's your MGR with the NBA?

  • lvl_130

what? no, seriously-what the fuck are you on about?

    • <<< one of the most angry and negative dudes ever... I feel bad for you bro #micropenisobey_pdx
    • see below for my follow-up response. i was genuinely curious as to what you were talking about.lvl_13

Let me give you some info on what it's like to be a "toy designer" and how it works and how you are "treated"... And why I am "offering toys"... I have to be careful with what I say and how I word it because I respect and appreciate what Mindstyle is doing for me. However, it's not the the greatest deal.

1.) I designed NBA "Diamond Dunks" from scratch, Initially because I've always wanted my own products and I'm a fan of Coolrain (google him). I sent out an email and some presentations to a few toy companies. I got super, super lucky and had interest.

2.) I spent 6+ months working for free and taught myself how to do 3D design in order to make these. That was 1.5 years ago.

3.) I have made ZERO dollars from this work, absolutely jack shit... No money from the NBA, no money from Mindstyle... I officially filed for bankruptcy in Oregon last month because I am a moron and work on "creative projects" for free. All in hopes they will pay off one day... That is how I work. I don't care about "money and clients and awards" - I care about getting shit made.

4.) These are gettng made and they are getting produced and licensed by the NBA. When!? Hopefully this fall, I have monthly calls with the company that makes them. I get 10% of the final production that I have to sell myself. I get paid nothing... That is how certain companies work. Mindstyle has invest a small fortune into manufacturing and marketing these. They own the license to the NBA, Disney and Marvel. As a designer, you are pretty much at their mercy, which sucks, but that is the way it is. I just want my idea produced and now it will be.

5.) I continue to work "for free" on this... No funding, no sponsors, no nothing... So while you dudes bitch about my offer. It's legit and I hope one day to finally make money and make great products that are available for the masses. This and shoeboxes are what I work on - deal with it.

    • So... about the same time you filed for bankruptcy, you posted this about how you made $50K on your shoeboxes:
      http://www.qbn.com/r…
      monospaced
    • I said I had an order for $50k from Adidas... I'm getting that box shot now and will post online. I made $7,500 and divided that between two people...obey_pdx
    • Therefore I made about $3k after taxes. 3K isn't enough to do anything with... I've never claimed to be rich or successful. I find my projects rewarding.obey_pdx
    • Email: jonathan bender (former NBA player) if you'd like verification of my store >>> http://www.jonathanb…obey_pdx

    • +1 for honesty...hopefully your tenacity will pay off!utopian
    • Thanks Utopian... It's a constant process of evolving and learning from failure. That is why I will succeed.obey_pdx

With that said, I still need a Cinema 4D animator... If I can't find one here, QBN is one of dozens of creative communities. I find more joy actually in reddit where the communities are helpful and curious and willing to take risks. That is what you must do as a "creative" - take risks, but yourself out there. Have faith in your ideas, your products and believe that your hardwork will pay off. That is how I get these opportunities and that is the philosophy I will take to heart regardless of money and profits.

    • *put yourself out thereobey_pdx
    • Doesn't seem like it's been working out for you very well, taking risks and putting yourself out there and all...monospaced
    • Filing bankruptcy while waiting for the hard work to pay off? Sorry, just seems pretty contradictory. Good luck?monospaced
    • It's called "the long game" and per·se·ver·ance >>> just because I am not rich, does not make me unsuccessful my friend (money comes and goes)obey_pdx
    • right... well I'll drink something expensive in hopes that your years of hard work behind you, and years ahead, might get you out of bankruptcy.monospaced
    • It will and shall... Thanks bro! I've had plenty of expensive drinks in my life.obey_pdx
  • obey_pdx-4

Than you have brands like the Jordan Brand that see your work and rip it off and make it centerpieces in their stores. Check out this vid at 1:33 mins after Russell Westbrook (was the centerpiece of the Toronto All-star game) completely ripped off my diamond dunks figures >>>

I got paid zero from that too.

    • *Insert crying MJ memeobey_pdx
    • should we forward this to them on your behalf and let them know that you should be paid?monospaced
    • Perhaps... It's only about the 10th time I've seen something that looks like something I've worked on years before they had.obey_pdx
    • That happens to all of us.monospaced

    what is art

    obey...

... I just have to say... your work is okay, man... lots of solid stuff...

... but based on your countless threads (100% about you)... you're a SHITTY businessman....

    ... like... terrible, dude. :(

Your shoebox didn't get you shit, you're battling bankruptcy... you can only pay people in toys... it seems 'everybody' rips you off (according to you) .. yet you work for nike, the nba etc etc... ?

... need to get yourself a good business manager, my friend. :)

    • Serious question: Why do you use ellipsis so much in your writing?studderine
    • chain of thoughts...that's my guess.lvl_13
    • honest answer... No clue... I do it everywhere. I don't even realize I do it although in notes I take them out when I run out of space (replace with em dashes)PonyBoy
    • ...pango
    • Ha, that's cool. Kind of hard to read (stream of consciousness) but I realize this is just a forum. I assume you write differently in work emails, etc.studderine
    • <<< Need to learn how to write complete sentences and use proper punctuation. :)obey_pdx
    • Actually my shoeboxes have gotten me quite far. I have several things in the works, it took me years of failure to succeed. Haters like you make me stronger.obey_pdx
    • There is no hate, numbnuts... you can't see through your own ego to see solid advice mixed-in w/a compliment.PonyBoy
    • Ok, Kevin Ross... I just looked at your portfolio and cannot say I am impressed at all. You now have zero credibility in my books.obey_pdx

well-in that case-good luck dude. sounds like you've been done a tough road (although working on shit you like doing-which sounds like a lot of artists). i wish the best for you. i don't know C4D so i'm no help in that respect.

    • I learned from watching youtube, you can can too... Really changes how you think about design, how things are made... Strongly recommend trying C4Dobey_pdx

Have you apprenticed/interned with someone that has produced a toy line or something similar? Could be a great way to build your skills and network.

When your figure is ready, and you need resin prototypes, hit me up. Bezoar5000 at gmail.

    • I already have prototypes and molds. These are being made in a factory in China right now... :)obey_pdx

Seeing that I grew up incredibly poor from a single parent household where I was on welfare and food stamps my entire youth, borderline homeless... And than going to a very small college in Hays, KS (Fort Hays State University) that costs next to nothing where I worked 2 to 3 jobs to survive. Please don't tell me about "being a shitty business guy"... Personally I hate business and was always terrible at it. And yes, a few key people took advantage of me and a few situations... However, I "shouldn't have been shit" after moving from the Pacific Northwest with no money and no connections... I have worked directly at Nike, Adidas and Microsoft in various roles and not many designers can say that. It's a process dude, I've never known anyone to patent anything nor try to produce their own products. Personally, I'd say I've done quite well despite my financial situation.

    • wouldn't you early life taught you to take care your finance and be smart with your business?
And boohoo. if you use your early life as an excuse, you will
      pango
    • always use it as an excuse for failure.
And i don't think counting how many big company you work with but made no profit or good cause is how you measure how
      pango
    • well you are doing.pango
    • why the bio? Don't let the chip on your shoulder define you.bezoar
    • give the dude a break - I agree with what he has to say here. Fucking bullying culture on this site gets v.tedious. Pango piping up for some reason.fadein11
    • bully? far from it. Or do you prefer them feeling ok with failure because of his earlier life? a lot of people have troubled early life.pango
    • people are getting so sensitive on this site.pango
    • Like I said, there are a few nice guys on here, and several TOXIC individuals who's only joy is to belittle others. That's far sadder than my life story.obey_pdx
  • PonyBoy5

you're so hung up on yourself that you didn't even realize I was complimenting you and giving you some solid advice...

I wrote my post exactly as I did to see if you'd bounce back w/another 'woe is me yet i'm awesome' response... ... you didn't disappoint, dude. :)

btw... you think you're the only one w/a shitty start to life that has any talent / drive? Look closer at the forum instead of yammering on about yourself non-stop and you'll see you're actually surrounded by like-minded / same-situation type folks.

    • Man... This website is TOXIC. Toxic for the soul...obey_pdx
    • QUOTE: "You're a SHITTY businessman and my shoeboxes didn't get me SHIT"... QUITE THE COMPLIMENT DUDE!obey_pdx
    • I'll send you a Diamond Dunk once they come out my friend :) Stay positive!obey_pdx
    • Did I attack your work? nope—said it was solid—I attacked your business approach—which is shit. You get screwed by 'big' people and companies—that is bad biz.PonyBoy
    • But you GO ONLINE AND PUBLICLY out big names and bitch and whine nonstop ALL while having a God-like chip on shoulder... it's weird, dude.PonyBoy
    • And I would sincerely LOVE to have one of your diamond dunks when they come out. AGain... not attacking your work AT ALL. :) Never have—never did—it's solid.PonyBoy
    • Yes, people get "screwed all the time"... That is how business work. Look at all major corporations... Behind every great success is a great lie.obey_pdx
    • I don't believe I bragged at all on this thread, I said I worked hard on something for 2+ years. What big names other than the Jordan Brand did I "out"!?obey_pdx
    • Kevin Ross and Ben Wexlar should spend more time on their portfolios and less time hating others. Carry on... The rest of you I love.obey_pdx
    • wow... you ripping on my folio now? something I haven't done to you... at all :)PonyBoy

    Hi there PonyBoy!

  • fate5

Chris imagine if you put all this time and energy and creativity into worthwhile causes, like non-profits, NGO's, universities.

    • good idea. if you're not gonna make money might as well not make money while doing something in the name of good cause.pango
    • Did that the first half of my career... That's why I moved to Portland and have zero regrets about doing so.obey_pdx
    • Oh good then.pango
