Has anyone worked with the new Youtube VR videos?
We may be getting this camera

Or more importantly, does anyone care about VR? Serious question...it's obviously the big news and will be a gamer's dream, but beyond that?
I remember when realtime and later 3D were pushed as big things, neither caught on (beyond niche markets). I can see it being cool for Facebook/Google showcasing places across the world, just not sure how many will be wearing goggles (I won't unless there's a demand for it professionally, which there might/might not be)
- not to hijack your thread or anything :-)formed
- Games are fun, but once I sat through a mini-documentary filmed in VR. After that I am convinced that VR is the future of movies.nb
- yea, its a big deal, its like a new type of monitor and way of story-telling, there are some great docs on how different it is to tell a story in VRfeel
- definitely a big deal...both from digital tech leaders POV and the demand from clients - I'm getting heaps clients wanting to explore VR platform experiencesvivid

I used to think VR only had a place in social networks, and games. But then when I saw the NYTimes VR cover on "The Displaced", and I couldn't help but feel more empathetic to the refugee situation. So I do think VR has broader potential now.

I did in CG, an animation I had to present of an installation that had monitors goin around the venue.
But the thing is, the Youtube VR is just 1 eye, not really Oculus Rift VR that is one feed to each eye and it is 3d, yt vr is just 1 source, and you can use the cardboard (if you have an android)
this is what I did, the quality ins't great, idk why
and this is a nextlevel camera for VR, not sure if its available yet, or if it works with youtube, but check it out, is incredible

We have a pair of Kodak SP360 4K coming in! Can't wait to start fucking around with it... I'll show you how it goes.
It's obviously not top notch quality, you'd need a really expensive rig for that (IE: http://smashing.wpengine.com/eye…)
btw, here's a list of options: http://thefulldomeblog.com/2015/…

Tested out the kodak pixpro and the quality is ok, not great.
This is pretty amazing:

I have the 360fly. I think it's about the same quality, it's ok for youtube but not creating high quality immersive experiences for VR. I am working on getting something better.
The good thing with the Kodak is you can can combine 2 of them together -

Definitely get at least a 4k bundle. Which runs about $900This one is $1,400 and seems like a reasonably priced step up from the kodak. It can take high quality photos in addition to video, which is something the kodak can't do.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/…I would also look into getting the AE plugin Skybox from Mettle -

^ I dunno. I saw one for the BBC Walking With Dinosaurs the other day that was linked via Facebook App by a friend.
When I clicked the link on my iPhone it just worked straight away on the phone. I could even move the phone around to pan the view.
Bloody amazing!
Granted this was within the Facebook app and not within Safari so they mustve partnered with Facebook to integrate this technology into their app.
Which suggests this technology isnt going anywhere fast as the mainstream is now picking up on it.

"a 30-minute audio-visual experiment for VR derived from the physical space within Stanley Kubrick’s film ‘The Shining.’ Using photogrammetry, 3D elements are extracted and extruded from the original film stills, and the subsequent fragments are stitched together and viewed along the original camera path."

I've been doing a lot with VR videos shot on Samsung Gear 360.
Its a great camera. What you want to know?
Does the Kodak have a blind spot top/bottom?
The Samsung is 'all round'

I've been doing a lot recently for both work and play with my Samsung Gear 360VR camera.
What do you want to know?
Have you checked out the Samsung over the Kodak?
It works out cheaper and to be honest I've not been overly impressed with the footage from Kodak. I thought it would be better than the samsung but no.I'm hopefully going to put aside some time this weekend to review the camera and put a video or blog post online.
