First, in english how do you call someone who makes illustrations as a job? An illustrator?
Second, is there any QBNers in here who are illustrator and make a living out of it?
Third, is it possible to make a living out of this easily or this is super hard to get known and get jobs?

1. Commercial Illustrator.
2. Their are quite a few; they're never "on" QBN because they're too busy working. http://arthurmount.com/ comes to mind.
: )
3. It's all about style; I've seen technical, great illustrators fail because they lacked style or tried too many styles. I've seen average illustrators succeed because they made their style relevant and in demand, or someone else did.
Illustration is commercial art, like advertising so the process is a little conflicted between expression and commercialization.
Godspeed Bennn!
- Just "illustrator." Don't need 'commercial' as a qualifier, it's implied.Gnash
- I know non-commercial illustrators.ideaist
- I've always heard them called 'artist' here. See: Art of the day or Fav Artist threads.prospect
- Artist is a loaded term, illustrator slightly less, and so on and so on...
...You are what you are.ideaist - Defining what you do is based on the business our fathers did, not the way we do things. It's not to appease ourselves, but to appease those in charge.ideaist
- </rant>ideaist
- If you Google illustrator you'll get more pertinent results though.prospect
- @ideaist -- what is non-commercial mean? I'd assume that was just an artist, no?Gnash
- @Gnash totally. So artist = non-commercial, illustrator = commercial artist.
Lolz @ technicalities.ideaist - So that would make Jeff Koons an illustrator?prospect
- prospect, that makes JK a hall monitor.doesnotexist
- I think Ben just wants to know what he should call himself in this context, "Illustrator" would be what he should use.Gnash
- "Commercial Illustrator" would look too 'ye olde shoppe' on a card or siteGnash
- My vote goes for "Illustrator" as well, no ambiguity there.prospect
- @doesnotexist
I guess your voice as a visual artist has more authority than mine.prospect - (not sure what the Koons reference meant - you don't think he's an artist, prospect?)Gnash
- Yes, of course he's an artist. I was just being a cunt about ideaist's
"So artist = non-commercial, illustrator = commercial artist." comment.prospect - Just a personal annoyance over the need to call illustrators artists. It's not a 'philosophical' issue for me just a practical matter of common definitions.prospect
- ah, get it.Gnash
- I love all y'all.ideaist

- WHY THANK YOU GNASH! I like your style too.baseline_shift
- I've never been able to track down your work Gnash. It's OK if you want to keep it private.prospect
- i'm a workhorse. nothing much to seeGnash

Bennn, look at who illustration reps are presenting and what styles they offer. You might want to join a house or get a rep.
I’ve used all of these guys before when sourcing illustrators:
http://www.colagene.com/fr
(montreal — cute girls there, btw)http://www.reactorart.com/illust…
(toronto - yes, I’m old school)http://www.folioart.co.uk/
(england — euro illustrators have been the easiest to work with - not sure why that is. they’re a humble lot compared to NA)

It's not easy. Not one bit.

I've read all you've said guise, thanks.
I'm still in the process of thinking of the future and your answers are helping me. thanks.

Are u an illustrator Bennn? Have a portfolio online anywhere?
- Bennn0
i do illustration yes. not a lot, but some.
And i dont want to post my website here. I try to keep my QBN life away from my profesional life. I say and post stupid things in here and Google really love indexing stuff in here.

- I don't think your style will allow you to make a living out of it. Keep at it if you enjoy it.prospect
- prospect having a bad day?
more like a bad live? which troll's pseudonym are you?uan - I'm having a regular day uan. Just giving Bennn my honest opinion. You think his work was a comercial viability?prospect
- @uan if you were to look beyond the superficial you would notice I'm giving Bennn viable work offers and offering him help.prospect
- I have gone through this thread again and I still haven't found a single valuable piece of feedback you have provided.
Whose trolling? (sic)prospect - well, what I like about bennn's drawings is the surrealism in it. I bet they reflect bennn's unconscious and conscious fears.uan
- I also like that they tell a story, they have a narrative in them.
They live a bit in a niche market though, you will need 'fans' to buy them.uan - my advice is to continue to develop the narrative and surreal element and tell longer stories. make your own books.uan
- but don't expect success over night, you will need perseverance and patience.uan
- thanks uan, i appreciate your comments. And prospect, you may be right that my work is kinda dark and twisted for commercial. its ok you said it.Bennn
- There's always editorial and spot art in mags and newspapers. They're not GREAT paying gigs, but it could work.dopepope

Super competitive and trend driven to a big extent – Not easy to make a good living out of it.
