The Coddling of the American Mind

In the name of emotional well-being, college students are increasingly demanding protection from words and ideas they don’t like.

I'm not sure exactly what discussion you or Georges want on this subject. I don't imagine there's a single person here that wouldn't agree that the subject matter of the article is yet another drop in the ocean of humanities descent.

What can we do about this? What do you want to discuss?

    • it's incredible how shallow you can be, I accept that I'm a troll but at least realize that you are killing any kind of discussions on a subject that shouldGeorgesII
    • scare the shit out of you if didn't have your head firmly stuck in your buttock,

sorry man, but you're no better than us
      GeorgesII
    • Killing? I have opened the doors for discussion. Please tell me what you'd like to discuss...set
    • sorry today I have no time to waste on your juvenile retort, you do no seem to understand the importance of this subject so I'll just let you enjoy your sandboxGeorgesII

Georges, you're more than welcome to indulge in being 'scared shitless' by this subject. You're also perfectly entitled to wrongly assume I have my head 'stuck in my buttock'.

I've spent the last twenty years studying the world. Studying the state of affairs. The path that the world has taken and the path that the world is walking upon and pondering the what the path ahead of us looks like. I spent probably 15 years being very bitter, very angry and very disappointed at the world around me. The world is disappointing. People are cunts. I get it.

I've detached myself from that now. I'm not here to save the world. I'm not here to push the world in a direction that my own entitlement thinks it should be pushed.

I'm at peace with my grain of sand on the beach. I have nice friends, a beautiful girlfriend, I earn lots of money for doing what I enjoy and I live in a bohemian paradise of immense diversity and experience.

I constantly have you telling me I should be scared, or I should wake up, take my head out of the sand etc etc... So what are you doing about any of this? You simply want me to be 'scared shitless' do you? Why?

What do you plan to do about these millennials and their self entitled, delusional, culturally raping stances? If you'd like to a have a discussion, then please tell me about what you're planning for the world.

    • do you want me to hold your hand?

Hello there Mr Self Important..... I'm Set, the devil's advocate.
Oh, you don't like that opinion? I'll take it then. That viewpoint is going to make your ego angry? I'll have it then.

Haha, funny that you still get so worked up by it. And you call ME a fool.

Not a single proton of anger in any of these posts. Just idle amusement and controlled folly.

You don't want discussion, you want to tell people how much more awake and aware and progressive you are than them. You want to tell them that they should be 'scared shitless' and that the feminists and SJW's are here to attack our world. You want to be angry at everyone, at how stupid they are, at how clueless they are. It gives you a sense of self importance and worth.

I get it, but as humorous as it is to me, I just don't think you get it.

    • wow, total breakdown on absolutely,

    so.... back to topic...

    That's a fucking fascinating article.

I'm often caught in the conversation "what's going to happen to all these kids who have grown up behind screens and the internet?" Well, perhaps this is what happens. Sheltered precious little darlings who never want their feelings hurt.

    • yep, there was another article correlating this to the extreme helicopter parenting and comparing to how kids are left to explore their own world in countriesGeorgesII
    • like germany/hollandGeorgesII
    • Does the internet shelter you? More likely it exposes you to all the crazy shit that exists in the worldyuekit
    • I think if you see violence even if complacent to by over exposure on the internet, its still considered trauma?yurimon
  • yuekit3

One thing I hope I never become is the old guy complaining about the crazy kids these days.

Yeah of course political correctness can go too far but I don't see the majority of millennials buying into it. In fact I think many of them actually have a more realistic view of things than previous generations since they didn't get everything handed to them like the Baby Boomers (who proceeded to drive the country into a ditch).

    • I agree with you, but sadly those kids that do not participate aren't the one forcing university to change their rulesGeorgesII
    • it seems the universities themselves fear a few people? what are the consequences if they take a stand?yurimon
    • usually those people were recommended or sent to therapy at sometime in the past.yurimon
  • GeorgesII4

    @ intelli, here's the article,

    http://rethinkingchildhood.com/2…

    • wow yeah. the "car culture" is an interesting point as well.inteliboy
    • I wish I still heard kids mucking about outside more often...inteliboy
  • yurimon7

Somehow. I see that there maybe an increase in anxiety issues somehow with the younger generation. I remember growing up was pretty violent from ny perspective both verbally and physical at times but how does the association and sensitivity or anxiety escapes past generations and their hardships? def is worth a study.

Its odd to have to try to sugar coat or be indirect if you sense a younger generation sensitivity. being direct and honest was virtue and people used to appreciate it because they just move on and try to do better or something.

btw, I wish I was joking,
but yesterday someone posted a link to some pretty rad photo manipulations of actors,
I followed the link and decided to read some of the comments,

someone actually complained the author should have used more people of different races,
goes to show you how entitled this generation is,

so much anger, but you do realize that you are not the only entry point to this link and that it was posted hours before on leddit? right,... right ?
      GeorgesII
    • Where on earth do you keep getting the 'anger' thing from? It's all in your head. I guess because you're angry you assume I am? I'm perfectly calm :)set
    • Your assertion that I must think I was the almighty origin of this wonderful content just shows how warped your view is.set
  • monospaced6

I don't quite see why the Universities feel compelled to change curriculum just because of some people's hurt feelings. If a word or subject matter reminds someone of a shitty experience, too bad. This is the real world, things happen, get used to it and be happy you're now in a University and a place where it can be discussed.

What the Universities are scared of isn't quite clear. In what form would the backlash come: less alumni donations, fewer students applying, or litigation?

I think the schools shouldn't be such pussies and should go on teaching whatever they want, using real words they want, and that students should learn to handle it.

If you're a student in law school and the professors can't use the word "rape" or "violates" because they makes you butt-hurt, then maybe you should reconsider your current career plan, don't you think?

    • lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits, and the universities don't want to lose the rich parents donationsGeorgesII
    • don't public schools already teach these sensitivities and are extremely politically correct?yurimon
    • I think the schools could easily defend themselves against a lawsuit. They're pretty well-equipped to show they aren't in the wrong. That's my opinion though.monospaced
    • "The teacher used the word 'rape' in a law class about a rape case, and I think that's wrong." Judge: STFU, really? Dismissed.monospaced
    • Higher education is exactly the place where you should have uncensored education. WIthout it you can't even talk about history or current events accurately.monospaced

Generation X, commonly abbreviated to Gen X, is the generation born after the Western Post–World War II baby boom. Demographers and commentators use birth dates ranging from the early 1960s to the early 1980s.

    Early 80's still X
