"The issue is not whether is a RIP or not - doubt any of this debacle was intentional - its more about the fact they didn't dig deep enough to see if there was anything similar out there."
-fadein11 http://www.qbn.com/topics/696687…This is a common problem and one that points to only one solution: A World Graphic Database. Designs are uploaded and then mapped for "fingerprinting".
Usage:
When pitching an idea, a person would upload their image and see if it matches anything. A person can then make a decision based on their findings.

aka a legal team.

why tho
- because designer knicker-twisting imperils all industry.detritus
- doesnotexist0
is the point of this to make sure you're being "original"?
solutions are aimed towards specific markets, i'm having a hard time understanding why you'd need this database

People are missing my point - it's the Olympics, with vast resources and budgets to prevent such incidents occurring. But perhaps they did do all the necessary checks.
I seriously doubt any plagiarism - what idiotic designer would steal something for a logo that will be so visible for years to come? (not justifying plagiarism ever either)...
They are similar and the Olympic logo should be unique.
Both are bland and boring and therefore what is there to plagiarise - who owns copyright on elements of a serif typeface? It'sa minor storm in a design world teacup. Non-designer civilians won't give a shit or even hear about it. And after London 2012 its obvious how people enjoy derailing the event by taking a v.short-lived interest in design.
Also as I said - there are many companies who provide a global search on such matters.

Good artists copy, great artists steal.
- Pablo Picasso- meh - most misunderstood quote in the history of art.fadein11
- ^^^ yes. but it's on topic and holds merit in a creative discussion.dibec
- if you don't understand what it means then it holds no merit in a discussion.doesnotexist

Have fun in your Orwellian design future. Once all the good ideas run out, everything will look shit.

It comes down to self pride and ethics.
Theft is theft.
Creative inspiration is creative inspiration.Everyone knows what they are doing. Holding people accountable for their actions, due diligence and common sense. We have a legal system that determines cases of plagiarism and creative infringement. In general, works pretty well*

pointless really. There are literally millions and millions of designs out there, the odds that any of us create something completely original is virtually nil.
we'd spend all of our time checking and cross checking the database and being afraid to actually create.
Every single piece of creative has been inspired by something else. You can probably track the steady evolution all the way back to cave paintings.
- It's the muthafucking olympics! The issue isn't about small design agencies accidentally doing something that has been done before.fadein11
- doesnotexist0
what's with the olympics analogy

"uhhh yeah, this looks great. but we did a cross check and found a few that appear to be similar, we really wanted something original. so we're prepared to pay half."
- doesnotexist0
usually you find out what looks similar when you're benchmarking early on in the project. ^^ if it's gotten that far, should probably consider a different career.
