This is the first time in ten years I'm considering something other than an apple machine so I really don't know anything about anything..
I want a laptop with a 13-15" screen, fast enough to work in photoshop and illustrator, mainly on Web projects but with the very occasional large print file.
What should I get? What brands should I check out? What version of Windows should I look at?
I'm not totally sold and may still get another apple but want to have a look at the competition.
Any advice appreciated!

You could look at the specs of the macbook you'd want and find windows machine equivalents... they're all the same hardware inside. Dell, Samsung, Asus all have decent machines... I'd get a touch screen personally.
As for windows, not sure you have a choice but Windows 10 is coming soon, in the meantime you'll have to deal with Win 8.1.
- oh and your requirements of wed + some print mean that you won't be using 10% of the computing power of any machine you buy... cheap will work for you.zarkonite

I'd look into a 15" macbook pro

Dell XPS 13 (touchscreen)

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade, so it should be pretty painless.

The Surface Pro 3 looks great for $800-, its a laptop and tablet in one and run Adobe PS and Illy. The only draw back is that its a 12' display.
- I think there's a surface pro 4 coming out soonpinkfloyd
- Yeah, I have a SP, its lovey, depends on what you needformed
- $800 gets you only the slow one, with inadequate RAM and no keyboard. The comparable one is actually $2K+monospaced
- If you want to upgrade to i7, a keyboard, 512GB of storage and 8GB of RAM it's so much more than a MacBook.monospaced

- The Dell XPS 13 2015 is the shit right now, buy it. You won't regret it. Go for the QHD+ Display with 3200x1880 resolution.
- Asus Zenbook (UX32LN or UX303LN) are also very good, full aluminium body notebooks.
- The Razer Blade 2015 is also a hot machine, but designwise obviously a ripoff. Still a good machine.
Make sure to have at least 16GB or RAM, because often you cannot change it and 512GB of SSD space. 256 is too low these days. Don't go below i5 and i7 and always buy a machine with a dedicated graphics card, don't go below nvidia 840M or 940M. Don't know about the numbers of AMD CPU's and GPU's.
Do not try to do serious work on those surface machines and other hybrid devices, they're shit.
