"Copy, art, and typography should be seen as a living entity; each element integrally related, in harmony with the whole, and essential to the execution of an idea."
— Paul Rand

- complete obviousness nicely put :)fadein11
- in the Design V Copy thread, it's not so obvious, and there's a good discussion going onmonospaced

Regarding the original quote - I think it is misused often as some kind of weird justification for plagiarism. I think it was originally meant as a comment on the fact very little was original anymore in the 20th century - everything is a remix.
- it's kind of meta when each new notable person steals that quote. I think Oscar Wilde is known for "talent borrows, genius steals"monNom

When Picasso said this he meant :
- good artists reproduce what they like in other artists' work
- great artists make use of what they like in others' work but push it in such a way that they fully make it theirs.

- This would be considered "paying tribute" to the original. Need to understand the context.yuekit

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent.”

Steve Jobs on working with Rand:
“I asked him if he would come up with a few options, and he said, ‘No, I will solve your problem for you and you will pay me. You don’t have to use the solution. If you want options go talk to other people.'”

from my Design1 instructor in undergrad (architecture), probably stole it from somewhere, but I've always loved it:

"Good artist copy, great artists steal"
You have to look deeper at the definitions of words being used. To "copy" means to make another more-or-less similar version of the original. To "steal" means to take possession and make it your own. As such people who read those quotes as "replicated the stuff you see" don't really go deep enough in the understanding of a relatively uncomplicated quote. As a matter of fact it's a good litmus test of people's sophistication. If one can't look beyond the obviousness of statement like this, what other "depths" do they fail to discover?
