First of all, Newark is a hell hole.
In our line of work you're going to leave this job or get laid off in a couple of years. I don't think the job market is so bad right now that you have to resort to working in an awful city.
Finally, Jersey is Jersey.Just.
don't.
do.
it.

From Jersey City, you have straight shot to Newark via PATH train or from Hoboken.
Many Brooklyn artists or Bohemian types have moved to Jersey City.
There are a lot of east Indian population in the area due to tech and financial firms having back office operations in Jersey City. More diverse and creative.
Hoboken is nice and more white but it is more frat boy. Lots of irish pubs and drunk 'just out of college'.

Thanks, guys. Jersey City sounds interesting. A Brooklyn friend told me that lots of artists have moved there. I'm bummed because I'd love to live in Brooklyn but the commute just seems awful. I wouldn't mind an hour car commute if that's all it is but 1.5-2 hours each way is hell.
Yes, I have a car and will likely keep it.
- plus you're stuck in brooklyn if anything happens, like a hurricane, big storm, &cdoesnotexist

stay in NJ.
Live by the water. Get a great view of Manhattan.

New Jersey is the "armpit" of America...Or so I've been told.

Do you have a car? If you don't have a car and want to live in NYC then consider about a 45min/ hour commute each way to get door to door from NYC > Newark. Living in NJ is great, don't believe the stereotypes.
Here's where not to live: Newark, Irvington, & Paterson.

Make sure you have easy access to Path trains and not just NJ transit?

Jersey City/Hoboken.
If you were working in Brooklyn/Manhattan I'd consider moving to one of those, but if you're working in Newark then Jersey City/Hoboken is convenient for both, and cheaper than the benefits of NYC.

Actually, it would be kinda dumb to move to NYC for a job in NJ. You're commute would be longer, and you get LESS SPACE.

hoboken is also clean!
