hey folks just doing some polling on museums because that's the industry i work in and i'd love to hear people's opinions on museums.

can you please answer the following questions or just give your thoughts.

    1. do you visit your local museum(s) regularly?

    2. do you think museums are relevant today? do we still need them?

    3. what type of museum do you like if any?
(nature, history, contemporary art, topic specific ones like war etc)

    4. what exhibits have you seen that you loved?

    5. if you had to create an exhibit what would it be about?

    6. what exhibit would you like to see?

    7. why do or don't you visit museums?

    8. do you go alone or with friends/families?

    9. what kind of experience do you expect when visiting a new exhibit or museum?

    10. how old are you?

    thanks

    1. No, not as much as I'd like to.
    2. Yes they are and will always be relevant. We do need them.
    3. I prefer the arts more then sciences. I feel like Science museums are out dated since its probably true that most of the things I learned and saw at history museums as a child have been found to be untrue or full of disproven theories.

    1. Yes, absolutely.
    2. Yes, absolutely. Objects trump information.
    3. Fine Art: Contemporary to Classical to comics.
    4. The list is too long. I live in NYC and the blockbusters are always good but then there's a slew of thematic and small shows that are impossibly nice. The Morgan had a Rousseau show a few months back that was as important and good as anything else i've ever seen.
    5. I do. Curated quite a few shows.
    6. An emphasis on quality; rather than pedantic slew of shock and awe exhibitions.

    1. do you visit your local museum(s) regularly? YES
    2. do you think museums are relevant today? do we still need them? HELL YES X 2
    3. what type of museum do you like if any? MODERN ART. THE FIELD MUSEUM IN CHICAGO. SIENCE AND INDUSTRY.
(nature, history, contemporary art, topic specific ones like war etc)
    4. what exhibits have you seen that you loved? I SAW THE DISNEY EXHIBIT WHEN IT CAME TO CHICAGO. THE dinosaurs when they were in town. I saw the masterworks of Japanese artists not too long ago with the family.
    5. if you had to create an exhibit what would it be about? Frank Lloyd Wright. Or maybe one on suits of armor.
    6. what exhibit would you like to see? I'd love to see the Monet exhibit again. I saw it twice when it came to Chicago. I'd go twice again.
    7. why do or don't you visit museums? Some things you have to see in person,... you have to smell in person. There are so many details that get lost if you don't see them in person.
    8. do you go alone or with friends/families? Mostly with family. I have to get the kids involved.
    9. what kind of experience do you expect when visiting a new exhibit or museum? An audio tour would be nice.

wow. i'm surprised by the results. it looks like all who responded think museums are relevant and needed. I wasn't expecting that to be the overwhelming response, unless those that aren't interested haven't responded.

  • antimotion0

    1. Yes

    2. Yes, they are absolutely relevant. You cannot just look at things on a screen.

    3. If I'm in NY, I appreciate the MET just to be blown awy by the history of creative material. If I'm in Japan, I tend to lean towards design, illustration and architecture.

    4. (All of these were in Tokyo)
    - ZAHA HADID retrospective where I was able to see her painted concepts along with physical models.

SATOSHI KON retrospective which could have been better, but I appreciated the effort.

ATTACK ON TITAN show displaying a huge number of sketches and final inked pages - along with sculpture and fully rendered gear from the anime.
The show also had some great material like the artists doodles from high school where he first came up with the idea.

    (In NYC)
AMERICAN INDIAN MUSEUM, the MET and MOMA

    5. Really tough question - see # 6, but truthfully I can't answer this in a concise manner.

    6. Too many things to see, here's a few I guess:
    - Original Film poster / Book cover art and design
    - A good show on manga and anime
    - Sci-fi film concepts in regards to modern technology and future technologies currently being developed.
    - Native Indian spirit animal history

    7. I like to go to see the work up close, study from the masters or simply see creative work mostly for inspiration or reference based motives.
I find that sometimes I like seeing the concepts and sketches more so than the final work. I've always been a fan of the "making of" type stuff for films, etc.

    8. Usually go with my wife or friends

    9. As I mentioned before, it's usually to be inspired or see reference material for projects I may be working on myself or simply to see the artist/designers work that I have a respect for.
